Visual Learner

4. What kind of learner?
I would most certainly classify myself as a visual learner, more specifically the “school of hard knocks” visual learner. I notice that I learn the best from mistakes I see being made in both myself and others because I am highly motivated to not repeat them. The problem is that making mistakes throughout life is not desirable because some things can only be learned once, such as proper driving procedures or gun safety. Thus, I need to try different ideas out when I am young and can afford to make lesser mistakes. When it comes to visuals, I am very fond of them. While most people grovel at the prospect of a presentation, I often volunteer to make them because seeing pictures and graphs is how I process information

I see my exceptional responsibility being clearly demonstrated with my perfect attendance. I have never been absent or tardy for school and I have made turning in assignments on time a habit. I take pride in my education, thus, I see my responsibility as a catalyst for my ability to work hard on things that I care about. I see myself being clever when I attempt to “game” the system by being as efficient as possible and thinking outside the box. The ‘long, hard, stupid way” never does crosses my mind because I need a better way to do everything. A good example of this is when I . Finally, I am persevering. This is especially obvious when it comes to sports such as swimming. I started swimming this year and it has been a very interesting experience. I am possibly the least best at this sport for my age and gender, but I do not let this deter me from trying. I simply remember that “sucking at something is the first step to becoming sort of good at something” and I keep swimming. Ultimately, if I cannot find an efficient way to do something, I can always fall back on hard work and perseverance to solve my …show more content…
I plan to major in the field of Biology for the purpose of studying the natural phenomenon of life and applying this knowledge to advance the field of medicine. Ever since I took Biology, I have had an unhindered fascination with genetics and evolution because just as the title of a Richard Dawkins book indicates, evolution is “The Greatest Show on Earth” and I would love to kick back and see the future and past of living organisms. While the topic is very controversial, I find the idea of cloning organisms and the ability to create inheritable disease-free babies through CRISPR/Cas9 to be very fascinating and I would hope that I can contribute to human welfare in an ethical, yet effective

Eugenics: Argument FOR by May Slaughter Human genome editing enhances humans with desirable traits, either known as positive or negative eugenics, possible. Eugenics was coined by Sir Francis Galton, cousin of Darwin, in 1883. 19th century Britain looked down upon anyone, of the lower class. They had planned on sterilizing all of the following: mental illness, alcoholism, criminality, chronic poverty, blindness, deafness, feeble-mindedness, and prostitutes. Along with Galton, Hitler has also given people a bad opinion of eugenics.…

I was dumbfounded from the opportunity to make this decision on my own; there were so many things that I wished to uncover and learn about so how could I possibly choose just one to focus on? Gratefully, this fear began to transform into excitement, even giddiness- I realised the true amount of freedom that was entrusted in me and the potential knowledge I would be able to gain from it. With this I began to commence my project on a topic I typically wouldn’t choose: the morality of genetic modifications through the use of the Crispr Cas9 system. This was entirely out of my comfort zone; the government and things of that nature is what inspires me.…

For scientists who are waiting for an alternative to existing genome editing tools, Crispr-cas9 is the solution which is comparatively easy and effective in using. Crisper allows the researcher to edit, target, excise and stitch genes of their choice between two end cuts. Crispr has the potential to make such advances which researchers used to dream about. It worked so well, scientists began to issue ethical statements for its use particularly about the power of Crispr to change germline in humans which presents a hotly debatable issue. Genome editing in human germline could have unpredictable effects on future generations.…

“ You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today,” Abraham Lincoln. Although responsibility is difficult to dodge, it presents itself with multiple benefits such as trust found within, and you are seen in a positive light. First and foremost, one of the benefits that come with being responsible is the trust that you preserve. To illustrate, during the Revolutionary Era, James Armistead was always punctual and loyal to the Patriots; furthermore, this responsibility led to the substantial amount of trust the troops had for him. As a known fact, once you have portrayed a favorable feature of yourself, it is easy to gain that same authority among other traits.…

The Lesson in Quitting For the past 7 years of my life, swimming has played a huge role. Growing up, I had always enjoyed being in the water, and was one of the odd kids that genuinely enjoyed swimming lessons, no bribes required (thinking about it, I wish I had some of those kids in the lessons I teach now). Overtime, it began to feel less like a passion and more like an obligation; something I had committed to that was too late to stop. I was afraid to quit, afraid to disappoint, and trying to be dedicated to a sport I had lost interest in made me start to hate it. This year, I finally decided to drop the sport, and am now embracing the huge change it has had in my life.…

I sat down by myself and reflected. After tens of thousands of hours of devotion, swimming has become a huge part of who I am, and will no doubt shape the person I will come to be. When I was twelve, swimming taught me to attack race two with everything I had, even if race one hadn't gone my way.…
