A complementary color scheme is used, taking colors that are opposite of each other on the color wheel. In The Hammock, the complementary colors red, blue, and yellow are primarily used. While both warm and cool colors are used in this piece, the predominant colors are warm (Ex: the girls’ tanned skin and bright yellow and pink clothing), and accent colors are cool (Ex: the blue and green in the landscape of Acapulco). The overall warmth and high saturation of the dominant colors give an uplifting and cheerful vibe to the painting while the cool accent colors create a sense of peace and calmness. Local color presents features or aspects of the natural appearance of things, and is what’s used in this particular piece. Chiaroscuro is the use of light (highlights) and dark (shadows) to create the illusion of volume and mass in an artwork. The Chiaroscuro used throughout The Hammock is clearly visible on the girls, which is what allows them to appear as three-dimensional

Within the book, colors are always described in great detail. One such example is, “a bruise on his face that in the oncoming days will change from mauve, to violet, to dull viridian green” (Hawdon, 2015, Part 2, Chapter 8). The colors represent the hope for a better world. A world where all colors can be seen instead of just black and white. The colors can do away with fear and bring comfort.…

The piece that stood out to me the most was Pre-Columbian America by Diego Rivera that features indigenous imagery and creates an alternative view of America. The piece itself was made with oil on canvas with bright colors, which features many scenes that depicts the daily lives of the indigenous people located at the lower half of the artwork – living their daily lives and chores which included preparing food, weaving clothing, building pyramids, farming and making art. In the background with very small detail, Rivera included images of the indigenous people sailing around in boats, gathering in circles and preforming the Danza de los Voladores (Dance of the Flyers) which was a ritual that consisted of dancers climbing of up a huge pole, tie themselves with rope and launch themselves until they reached the ground as a way to ask the gods to end droughts. The crops that were included in the artwork, corn and nopales were done with extraordinary detail, were one could see the details that Rivera included that make them more realistic - the corn was especially important to the indigenous people…

Although there are many contrasting colors in the painting that would ordinarily give a busy feeling, they instead give off a calming sense. The colors, that give a cartoonish feel, make the audience feel relaxed due to the types of green and red tones used.
