Vista Maria first began as an orphanage by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd over 130 years ago. In 1883, 5 Sisters of the Good Shepherd came to Detroit to the Ward Mansion to establish their first home. As the Industrial Revolution went on, the home turned into 33 Sisters caring for more than 200 girls and young woman. Through the next 30 years, the home named the “House of Good Shepherd expanded their services, however did not have an adequate amount of land to provide these services. The Ford family stepped up and gave the Sisters 50 acres of land on West Warren Avenue in Dearborn Heights for just $1.00. The largest programs in place are the Specialized Treatment Programs. These programs offer residential treatment for adolescent girls with support services including: a health clinic, on-site junior and senior high school operated by Clara B. Ford Academy, cafeteria, recreational facilities, meeting rooms, a chapel, administrative offices, and individual/group/family therapy. Vista Maria also provides Community-Based Programs of General Foster Care (case management of children who have suffered abuse or neglect and are entering the system or have been moved from a more intensive program to prepare them to reunification with their permanent home), Specialized Foster Care (children in foster care with more specialized needs/deliquent youth), Intensive Supportive Foster Care (children in foster care with severe emotional disturbances who are exiting from a psychiatric hospital or residential program by providing in-home services, training, and support to the child and family), and Youth Assistance (10-week course for at-risk middle school aged children and their families that provides individual/group sessions to improve social and conflict resolution skills). The Journey to Success program is also available to at-risk teens in Wayne County in providing them with mentors, after-school activities, work to address family challenges, and transitional residential services. Additional programs are also available such as the Shepherd Hall Transitional Living Program that provides housing and support services to 18-24 year olds for 12 to 18 months whom are homeless and/or recently aged out of the foster care system and the Human Trafficking Program. Vista Maria is recognized as providing best-in-class residential and community based treatment and therapy, as well as being nationally recognized for the Shepherd Hall Transitional Program.
