During visiting Hsi Lai Buddhist Temple, located at the top of the hill in Hacienda Height, I explored many religious ritual activities. People who were participating religious ritual activities and the surrounding are interesting and refresh to me. Everything in His Lai Temple met my expectations which I imagined before. The experience there was corresponded to what I learned from class and made me understand more. Hsi Lai Buddhist Temple is surrounded by a green neighborhood on the hill. The buildings in the temple are built as traditional Chinese temples, which have red paints and gold roots. There are sculptures of animals at edges of roof of the main shrine, which are symbols of importance. When I first stepped in the temple, I walked on white stairs. The doctor finds out what causes the pain and provides treatment, like as in Four Noble Truth: people suffer because of craving, and they conquer it. At last, people reach enlightenment like a sick person becoming healthy. Finishing talking about the Four Noble Truth, tour guide takes us to the right garden, named Quan’yin Garden. As I say before, Quan’yin is a medicine Buddha who provides medicine and treatment to people who are suffering. The water in Quan’yin Garden is like the kindness of Buddha and never stops. Around Quan’yin statue, there are four kings. The tour guide told us that they represent for earth, wind, fire, and water. These four elements are still major elements in the earth

They were Catholic Monks of the Order of Cicstercians of the Strict Observance (Trappists) performing a routine most of them have been doing for more than 60 years; rising in the middle of the night to attend Vigils and to pray together by chanting Psalms and doing the readings of the Divine Office. That night, an even more improbable person participated in the Liturgy of the Hours—a convinced atheist. I was that unbeliever. I felt completely at home, as I had participated in the same routine more than 30 years earlier when I had joined the Dominican Order as a young man beginning studies for the priesthood.…
