Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Visit My visit at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) was a long one – however, the visit was still an exquisite one because some of the artwork that was there that caught my eyes. There were countless stunning and alluring artworks at the VMFA that I took pictures of in the collections I visited. I went to the American + European Design Collection (Art Deco and Art Nouveau), the African Art Collection, the East Asian Art Collection, and the South Asian Art Collection. On the downside of the collections that I visited, there were so many art pieces I took pictures that I wanted to write about that were from those collections, however, I made up my mind and choose the artworks for my focused collection that …show more content…
1). Shiva, dating back to the 5th century, is one of the most pertinent gods in Hinduism, along with Brahma and Vishnu, and is a member of the trinity of Hinduism (Cartwright, “Shiva” par. 1). Shiva is a complex god that represents righteousness and benevolence serving as a protector, but also a leader of evil spirits, ghosts, and vampires, and the master of thieves, villains, and beggars (Cartwright, “Shiva” par. 1). In addition, Shiva is also a Comic Dancer, known as the lord of dancers (Nataraja) (Cartwright, “Lord of Dance” par. 1). Furthermore, as Nataraja, Shiva represents his three roles as a Creator, Preserver and Destroyer (Cartwright, “Lord of Dance” par. 1). In Hinduism, the universe is said to be reborn in cycles at the end of every 2,160,000,000 years, where Shiva sabotages the universe (Cartwright, “Shiva” par. …show more content…
The exquisitely designed and crafted three-dimensional sculpture displays the three supreme gods of Hinduism, who are accompanied by their consorts and retinues (VMFA Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva Label). The artist of this particular sculpture of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva is unknown – made in the India, Rajasthan (VMFA Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva Label). The sculpture was built in the late 19th century to the early 10th century, made with honey-colored sandstone (VMFA Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva Label). The sculpture displays Vishnu (with the broken off head and leg) in the middle sitting crossed legged in meditation while holding a flaming discus and club in his two upper hands (VMFA Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva Label). Below Vishnu is his wife Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, good fortune, youth, and beauty, and his winged mount, Garuda (VMFA Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva Label). On the right of Vishnu sits Shiva, and on the left of Vishnu sits Brahma, the four-faced god, with his consort Saraswati, who rests on Brahma’s bent left knee (VMFA Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva Label). The Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva is an original sculpture that has geometric shapes and contour lines because of all the figures that are on it. Furthermore, the Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva sculpture is a real texture art piece that has evenly proportioned retinues that are symmetrical to each other. My comprehension

According to the Hindu religion, Shiva, the powerful last deity of the Hindu triumvirate, is responsible for the destruction and re-creation of this world (BBC). Many believe his powers destroy the imperfectness allowed to spawn in this world so as to make way for necessary and valuable changes. With just a casual flick of his blue-tinted wrist or a deadly performance of the Tandav dance, Shiva is able to send the world spiraling into chaos, though some Hindus call it “constructive destruction.” Similarly, in “Shiva,” by Robinson Jeffers, a hawk rampages through the world, destroying it so the world can later be renewed. Literary devices such as imagery and symbolism show that the theme of “Shiva” is destruction can lead to fresh starts.…

There are many exhibitions being shown at the SCAD Museum of Art. Two that caught my eye were "Considered” and “Blood Bound.” In the work of “Considered,” artist Carrie Mae Weems conveys a range of her work that is confrontationally different and but associated with the focus on the consideration of history. In “Blood Bound,” two brothers Steven and William Ladd worked together on their first all-inclusive look into their shared studio practice.…

Another piece that I enjoyed in the exhibit was Matt Bollinger’s work “Storage.” I thought the way that he used acrylic paint and collage, really went well together. So well, that it was hard to differentiate where he used the acrylic and where he added items. One of the pieces that I didn’t care for was Thomas Kiefer’s print “Satisfies!” The print was a picture of several different types and sizes of Snickers.…

These are shown in the same gallery to create the theme of the ancient Egyptians and how symbols and artwork were a big part of their culture. The portrait of Khafre Enthroned is similar to this sculpture because both men are seen as noble, and the texture shows how antique the artworks are. The difference between them is that the portrait of Khafre Enthroned is bigger in size and the stone is diorite. Unfortunately, The Haremhab as a Scribe of the King is not in the book but the sculpture interestingly represents something we should all live up to, which is wisdom and understanding. One quality that stands out is the key and the lock in front and back of Haremhab.…

The Dallas Museum of Art was the complete opposite of what I imagined it to be like. Before attending the museum, I had very low expectations. When I thought of “art museum” I imagined dusty walls lined with undiverse and outdated art. I imagined a place old couples went to because they had nothing better to do with their time. A place where the past lingered and grew old as civilization quickly moved on and forgot about it.…

I think I lack interest in art because it’s hard for me to understand the meaning or the story behind the piece of art. I decided to visit Tampa Museum of art because this museum because is the closest one and because I heard about it before from my friends. Also one of my friends posted some pictures for the museum surroundings from outside and they caught my eyes. Although I’m not a big fan of art, I thought by visiting the museum I could learn more about history and also I can learn about different cultural beliefs from their art. Before visiting the museum I had a picture on my mind of what the museum is going to look like, but it turned out to be different from what I had in my mind and my…

I was completely clueless about museums and didn't know what to make of them. I went online and read a little about the museum and found out that it was one of the top five museums in the country because of its cultural diversity and integrated urban population. The personnel gave me a brief tour of the museum and told me the museum does not hold gallery collections, but their exhibition is based on a periodic basis. The museum was also filled with visitors and their families, all engaged in a series of photo shoots.…

Flowers and colorful, patterned cloth adorn the large bronze statue, the many hands of the Hindu god tinted with pigment. At the feet or base of the shining awe-inducing god, lies a rainbow of food and gifts. Images of yellow, green, red, blue, and purple, plants, animals and gods are splashed and slapped on the walls, red lentil paste splattered over top of them in thick layers. The largest painting is of Shiva and Parvati together, both holding their palms out while standing on a giant pink-tipped lotus, a small ganesh lies at their feet. While many of the classic religious pieces are sacred, they are not considered to be so holy that they cannot be touched, or that the people can’t interact with the idolized paintings and sculptures.…

This piece of art that I have researched, will be writing about, and comparing to other pieces of art is the Jain Shrine. The country of origin that these shrines come from is India. Unfortunately we do not know of the artist that created any of the Jain Shrine’s in particular that are still preserved today. It is suggested that more than likely a wealthy individual from northwest India would have had this small shrine created for his own private Jainism religion purposes. Jainism is a religion of India which is older and was firmly established at the same time of the origin of Buddhism (Jain).…
