Case 1: The leadership style and behaviors that is used by this leader would be most effective is a Visionary style. According to Goleman, 2000, the Visionary style of leadership is most beneficial when clear direction is needed. It is the ‘follow me’ style of leadership. The leader in this case could have showed good leadership by organizing the exit strategy during the meeting fire alarm. This chosen leadership style or behavior will be most effective because it displays self-confidence. It mobilizes people toward a goal (in this case, getting out of the building effectively and efficiently).
Case 2: The leadership style and behaviors that is used by this leader would be most effective is the Coaching style. According to Goleman, 2000, the Coaching style of leadership is most beneficial when employee performance needs to be improved, or to develop long-term strengths. If this leader is going to become a manager, he needs to learn to trust his staff with the modelling tasks. This chosen leadership style or behavior will be most effective because it allows staff to ‘try this.’ It helps develop staff and displays self-awareness.
