In a faculty meeting, we would discuss the importance of vision statements and tell the staff that we were going to develop a new vison statement. The first step would be to break teachers into departments to brainstorm ideas. Each group would be based on grade level and department for our elective teachers. Groups would then report back to the “leading committee”. The leading committee would consist of one teacher from each group, one parent and student from each grade level and the principal would serve as an ex-officio to the leading committee. We worked jointly to develop this vision statement with each of us having suggestions and ideas. We looked at several vision statements from our current schools and other schools in our county. We identified a few words that we would like to incorporate into our vision. We felt it was important that we included lifelong learners, 21st century, community and empower in our vision statement. We felt it was important to empower students in our vision statement so that they take ownership of the vision. Next, we agreed that it is important that students are able to learn their entire life and education doesn’t end when they leave school. Then, we used 21st century because the changing technology that students need to use and for them to be able to adapt to new technologies as they emerge in their life.
