Throughout the Odyssey, characters who follow the virtue of intelligence over strength are rewarded, while those who do not are disciplined. Odysseus uses his best talent to take down a Cyclops. Odysseus and his men go into a cave because they are curious what lives in it and soon find out a human eating Cyclops lives there! Instead of attacking the Cyclops right away, Odysseus decides to trick the Cyclops so when they attack him it won’t bring attention to the other Cyclops. While in the cave, Odysseus had followed the virtue of the power of wits over strength, but the Cyclops had disobeyed it so he was punished for it by losing his only eye. “Straight forward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it deep in his crater eye.” (904) Since the Cyclops had made a bad decision and eaten one of Odysseus’ crewmen, Odysseus had felt like he should have redeemed his fallen comrades. “Every action has a consequence”- Adam Rogers.
