I know when he leaves that he has filled out a counseling rating form, with which I might be able to see certain aspects of today’s counseling sessions as beneficial and those that were deemed by the client to not be beneficial. This component of our clinic’s follow up of client experiences helps shape the ability to determine the effectiveness of counseling sessions together.

The standards that govern the professional conduct of counselors are provided by American Counseling Association and help counselors make wise decisions regarding difficult dilemmas in their provision of care. There is recognition that an ethical counselor does more than simply follow the law, which is the body of rules that govern the affairs of people within a community. Counseling professionals follow six basic moral principles, autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice, fidelity and veracity (Corey, 2015.) A particular aspect of the legal care in Luis’s case is the reality of confidentiality being breached should his probation officer require information, as this is recognized as one exception to confidentiality when in connection with a psychological examination ordered by the …show more content…
Striving for clarification from the client, quality counseling allows for discussions about client ideas regarding the nature and function of therapy as the client sees it. This frequent checking in with the client can help guide the counselor desiring to honor diversity within his practice. Acknowledging my own cultural values, bias and attitudes regarding alcohol intake and Hispanic households, and recognizing that a Latino male may feel uncomfortable with me as a white counselor. I may address the difference in heritage early in our work together. I might choose to provide self-disclosure regarding my two siblings who have married into culturally diverse families from my own.I might also mention that alcoholism has affected my own family, attempting to present this in a way that does not prejudge how it has affected my
