In spite of all of the people who despise his plan to completely transform the Earth, he still believes that it can work and fights for it until it is destroyed. “I believe in the Mortality Doctrine because if what it can accomplish- for both Tangents and humans,” (106) he tells Michael. “I’ve spoken of this before. Immortality. It’s possible, and we can make it happen, if you’ll just work with me.” Even though Kaine has been rejected when asking for help with the Mortality Doctrine many times before, he does not give up on persuading others to believe that it will be beneficial, especially Michael, who is also a Tangent that the V.N.S. plan to kill. He also tells him, “I’m going to show you how this process works- how it will work- and then I’ll let you decide. I’m confident you’ll come around to my way of seeing things before long.” (203). By saying this, Kaine proves himself to be persistent by believing that his goal will someday be accomplished and work out the way he planned it. Even though Michael does not believe that the Mortality Doctrine will be a positive change as much as Kaine does, he still decides to work with him for a short time, just to stop the V.N.S. from killing them. He is a Tangent who works alone and is targeted by many different people and organizations that want to take his life. In spite of acting calm and composed about it, he also acts arrogant when talking to Michael or Helga, people who he does not see as equals. When he thinks that Michael could have been tricked by Agent Weber’s announcement, he says, “You know very well that was just another of Weber’s shows. I’d be insulted if I couldn’t plainly see in your eyes that you know that wasn’t me. After everything I’ve done, I’d be very upset if you thought I’d actually fall into that trap.” (192). After saying this, Michael becomes irritated towards him due to his arrogant behavior and tells him, “Just talk to me like a normal person. Hear what I have to say without trying to intimidate me!” (193). Even though he was convinced that his plan to completely change human life on Earth would work, however, he was able to learn to treat others as equals when Helga’s organization stopped him.
