Virginia Shooting Video Essay As the debate of whether to show the video subsides, new arguments arise creating a huge wave over the social media sites and news stations. Two main issues can be debated when discussing the Virginia shooting video. First, the privacy and dignity of the victims of the shooting are at stake. The second issue is criminal violence, however most news sources seem to make the subject about gun control. It’s not a matter of the video being shown anymore. The video has already been released, and is being played by many different news stations. Some argue that most stations only show still frames, or give descriptions of what happened, but doing these actually just create the video in our heads. The shooter’s victims most likely have families and friends that don’t want to witness the gruesome event over and over again. The news stations shouldn’t show the video out of consideration to the grieving families. There are already restrictions from the FCC on what can or can’t be shown on the news. For example, there are decency standards that restrict news outlets from showing nudity, cursing, etc. Many times, news agencies will issue a warning before showing disturbing content that might offend some viewers. Even with new technology, videos similar to the Virginia shooting video probably can’t be completely removed from the internet. That doesn’t mean that the media shouldn’t try to remove it to the best of their abilities.
