As nurses we focus on the patient’s (or individual’s) health. We treat not only the patient physically but also use treat all areas of the patient. We consider anything that may help or hinder the patient’s recovery including the environment as well as many other factors. Henderson’s theory makes me think of someone very dear to me, my grandmother, and how if the nurses thought like Henderson at the time of her sickness it may would have changed her situation. During the ordeal the family was not even informed of her treatment even though the family was constantly there caring for their love one. Day in and day out as family we cared for our loved one without any hesitation. The staff at the facility began to treat our family as if they were just another face. At this time it became very clear that nursing was where I wanted and needed to be.
I have always worked with the psychical and the mentally challenged as a respite care nurse. I would go in and take care of the patient and the family in the home. It was about giving the family a break. This is important because being a care giver is hard, as I learned this with my grandmother sickness. In the last few years I have realized my passion for psychiatric nursing. This intuitive did not come until I was employed at a psychiatric facility.
