H2O by Virginia Bergin, is a book about poisonous, bacteria-filled rain. This book is the fictional story of a girl named Ruby Morris’ life. In the beginning of the book, Ruby is at a party. While at this party, the weather man forecasted a thunderstorm, and the mother of the boy who was having the party, ran outside and made everyone come in. Now everything would have been fine, because everyone was inside, or so you’d think. A boy named Casper McCloud left his phone outside, where the party was taking place, and by this time, it’s already pouring outside. He runs out. When he gets back inside he seems fine, for a moment. The things that I enjoyed in this book, are the way that the author wrote it. To me, she did a very good job capturing the emotions of a teenage girl. For example, throughout the book, Ruby kept mentioning the fact that she didn't have her phone. “MY CELL! I DIDN’T HAVE MY CELL!...”(40). She made it her priority once she was home from her party (page 44). And at the end of the book, “Darius Spratt has got a ton of my stuff. Including my cell phone.”(327). She also got the “normal teenage girl” reaction. Once Ruby got her phone, she called 911 multiple times immediately. She calls 108 times, to be exact (I counted)(page 143-144). The author also added cursing. Which, I’m not saying that I enjoyed the cursing, but it’s just gives the book a more young adult feeling. Also, the way that the author “curses,” she censors the words with little butterflies (pages 50, 53, 67, 101, ect...). One thing that I did not like about this book, was the authors description of Ruby’s reaction when her parents died. When her mother died, Ruby began to scream, and she cried for a few hours (pages 65-66). After that, she doesn't really seem affected by the death. She does think about her mother, and what she would say in to her in specific times, “sip, I heard my mom say. Sip, Ruby.”(152) When Simon died, she didn’t have a big reaction. All Ruby did was get up and leave the house(133-134). She remembered things he said as well; for example, “I remembered something Simon had said- or rather something he had not said. I’d questioned the thing about the tap water, you see.”(135) The author could have done a better job on making Ruby’s emotions more life-like, by adding more effect.
