Virgilio Elizondo

In A God of Incredible Surprises by Virgilio Elizondo, who is the leading Latino theologian in the United States today, we get to witness his thoughts about Jesus’s life on earth. Elizondo introduces some very intriguing thoughts on the birth of Jesus, and what all that could mean for humanity. For instance, “… in the Apostle’s Creed: He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary” (Elizondo, 2003, 22). After this, Elizondo makes a very interesting point come to mind by asking why Jesus should be conceived by the Holy Spirit. Elizondo believes there is nothing more godlike than man and woman creating new life from the bond of love. It makes him grow more curious as to why God wanted a different way for the creation of his own son. Mary who bore Jesus is another view point to look from in the birth stories about Jesus. What was she supposed to do? Elizondo brings some very clever insight on this situation. “Who was going to believe her?” (Elizondo, 2003, 22). This is all true issues that take place during the Posada, and it is not because there isn’t vacancy; it is because of who they are. This intersects because when Mary and Joseph wanted to stay they were despised Galileans seeking stay in Judea. It is hard to see the slightest bit of similarity in these situations. I believe that is why they celebrate with the Posada, because they want an accurate representation of the story during the holiday. You must understand that both stories resulted in the turning down of stay to people who just were not accepted because of a situation they could not change. Mary and Joseph were destined to bare Jesus together, and the ones who celebrate the Posada were born into their culture. We should not close the door on people who can’t change their
