Although previous research has shown that violent video games have a potential to stimulate violent behavior, violent video games played online are more likely to inspire aggression than those played offline. Jack Hollingdale, a psychologist from the University of Sussex, and Tobias Greitemeyer, a psychologist from the University of Innsbruck, investigated four groups of people that played the violent video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare either online or offline and the neutral video game LittleBigPlanet 2 either online or offline. The researchers did not initially tell people the real purpose of the experiment, but told them that it was just marketing analyses. After playing video games, the researchers offered people to put some amount of a new super hot sauce into a receptacle for a taster introduced as a person who could not endure hot sauces at all, but consented due to a valuable reward for doing this. Hence, the group of people who used more sauce would be considered more aggressive in accordance with the researchers’ method. As a result, both players of the online and offline violent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare were more inclined to the more aggressive behavior than players of the neutral LittleBigPlanet 2. In addition, “participants who had played the violent video game online were more aggressive compared to participants who had played the violent video game offline. . ,” as the psychologists write (Hollingdale, et al. 3).
