There are many strong arguments on both sides of the issue, but the strongest arguments are adamant that there is no link between violent video games and violence. Violent video games are not the source of violence in people that play them. The evidence to support the accusations against violent video games are not vivid enough to make a solid claim. Chris Ferguson, the department chair of technology at Florida’s Stetson University, says, “I think we need to be honest that the evidence is all over the place.” (Kelly, P.8). In the article Violent Video Games: Dogma, Fear and Pseudoscience, Christopher Ferguson discusses how poor or inaccurate research has led to a public misunderstanding of the effects of violent video games. In the article he discusses how much of the research, which has been misrepresented or disingenuous with its results or conclusions, has led to claims of negative effects which may be incorrect based on these issues. As part of this, I wanted to review how the people have viewed violent acts and attributed video games to their effect. Ferguson (2009) stated that after the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007 two individuals, Phil McGraw (Dr. Phil) and Jack Thompson, made claims to the public that the shooting was related to violent video games. I wanted to see if these points were made independent of the other factors associated the issues Ferguson was presenting.…

They say that just because of the blood, gore, mutilation, and bodily harm that is in video games that makes people violent. There’s nothing that can connect these two things together. Studies have proven this to be the truth, but the media just won’t accept it to be the truth. They blame video games for school shootings and violent crimes because they’re too scared to blame it on mental stability and mental problems because they don’t want people mad at them for claiming that mental problems increase the chances of violence because the person doesn’t know how to cooperate under pressure causing them to do harm to others. You can’t just blame a video game because you don’t want to blame violence on mental unstable people.…

Video Games Do Not Cause Violent Behavior Over the years there have been several incidents that have stirred up the emotions of people, parents and especially investigators. These incidents include the Sandy Hook Elementary Shooting, the Columbine Massacre, and the incident in Colorado where a man went on a shooting spree in an Aurora movie theater. There was one key thing that aroused people’s emotions connected by investigators to all three incidents: video games. This led to the belief that if the parents’ children play violent video games that the child will become violent. Even though people have been led to believe that video games cause people to become cruel and commit violent actions, video games do not cause people to commit acts of violence because they don 't have time to…

Parents need to become more knowledgeable of content and exert greater supervision over the games their children are playing. In a study performed by Woodard and Gridina, they stated that, “While most parents (88%) report regularly supervising their children’s use of television, only about half (48%) report regularly supervising their children’s use of video games” (Woodard & Gridina). Why are parents worried about the programs that are on television more than the content in video games? Have parents become desensitized to the content of the video games which causes little worry of long term effects? With hundreds of theories that state why youth gun violence has become a major problem, it is hard to simply explain the correct answer.…
