In an age where people are trying to take guns away from law-abiding citizens; we need our guns now more than ever. Everytime there is a mass shooting this debate pops up, yet we continue to have mass shootings. If some teachers were allowed to conceal and carry guns in schools, mass shootings would dwindle. The resource officer at the Parkland shooting never went inside and 17 children died, meanwhile, the resource officer at the Maryland school shooting engaged the shooter and saved countless lives. This illustrates the effects that a capable person with a gun can have on saving the lives of children.…

Navy Pier is walked down thousands of times a day, but people avoid neighborhoods with boards and bars on the windows. Thousands travel to Chicago to witness a Cubs baseball game, but no one speaks out on who shot a child during a drive-by shooting. A tragedy, as defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is an unfortunate or sad event that causes strong feelings of sadness or regret. A tragedy either brings people closer together or splits them further apart, but either way, after a tragedy occurs, people need a change; something to help them cope with the problem at hand. In the United States, a very large issue is mass school shootings, which have created many tragedies for people in the nation. Approximately 150 school shootings have occurred in the United States during the last two years, and those shootings added on to the recent Oregon one make people see the need for a change in the current gun laws. Over the past few years there has been an escalation in the use for guns. One reason for why this might be happening is because the guns are being used for mass school shootings, such as: the Sandy Hook shooting, the Parkland shooting, and many others that people don't even know about. This problem has now caused a controversy over whether teachers should carry guns while working in school or not. Many people believe that the only way to defend children during these shootings is if the staff carry guns. Although this idea seems to have many great advantages against shooters, it also opens room for more issues involving the children and the teachers.…

The Disturbing Issue That Is Emerging In America Mass shootings in America have become a regular occurrence, including the most recent shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon that killed many innocent people. Statistics show that active shootings have increased by forty percent since 2000 (McKirdy1). Some argue that this is due to social networking communities that validate one’s viewpoints toward controversial issues, the abundance of violent content in entertainment, and the dramatic increase of mental illness in our country. While others claim that advocacy groups provide positive advantages and media violence is not correlated to disruptive behavior. Regardless of age and background, one can access anything that has ever…

In addition to the grimly countless gun deaths, domestic violence and violence against women is still problematic for a large number of people, and reports of child abuse are rampant. Every day we hear the news from a major city and the reports are filled with stories about the atrocities against children, or indeed, the weak. Perhaps the anger stems from people believing that we are supposed to be a civilized society and when we hear about another child found in deplorable conditions, a woman beaten beyond recognition, a Black teen shot because he was wearing a hoodie, a gunman opening fire in a movie theater, or another country ravaged by war and genocide, it is hard to believe violence is waning.…

What counts as a lawful or reasonable shooting? Videos of police brutality are surfacing over the course of this year and more specifically over the past few weeks. Although the videos or recordings are not photographs, they still hold significant meanings and interpretations. The many recordings include the shootings (murders) of Trayvon Martin, Freddie Gray, Laquan McDonald, Walter L. Scott, and many more. I believe that videos, specifically the recordings of police brutality, have the power to transform similar to how Sontag describes photographs in which she states “that photography transforms scenes of violence and suffering into something beautiful to evoke empathy, pity, or shock.…
