There is no exact answer to why sexual violence occurs so frequently in conflicts (Class notes 11/27). Some, such as Wood and Gereke (2010), believe it has to do with gender and how that cultural norms change when introduced into combative situation. These forms of sexual violence can take many different shapes, ranging from sexual slavery to forced prostitution (Wood 2010). An aspect of sexual violence in the military that is still unclear to me is how the predator goes from praying on victims that are a part of their own branch, to committing sexual violence as a tool or perk of war on the native population to where they are deployed.
