Most people believe that exposure to violent media has negative effects on children but there are also those who believe that it can be beneficial to some as well. Amanda Hermes, a freelance writer- mainly about children’s health, green living, healthy eating, states in her essay, “Children’s Exposure to TV Violence & Aggressive Behavior” that watching violence and aggression can lead to acting violent and aggressive. In contrast, Gerard Jones, in his essay “Violent Media is Good for Kids” argues that violent media can help shy children break out of their shells, grow in self-confidence, and become more creative. Although both Hermes and Jones present reasonable arguments, I believe that Jones had the stronger argument. Jones’ argument was stronger because he established himself as being a credible source, included real life evidence, and included a personal anecdote about the benefit of violent media in his life.…

Conventional wisdom contends that violent media is harmful to children, but the author flips this assertion on its head by claiming that violent media, instead, provides positive psychological benefits to children. The evidence that he presents to support his argument is underwhelming, at best. He does not provide any empirical data to support his claims (his study is the closest thing to empirical evidence, but it’s lacking). He relies mainly on his experience as a child, his experience as a parent, his experience dealing with his son who, like he, suffered from low self-confidence, and his experience working with several troubled children who, in the end, benefitted from being exposed to violent…

In “Violent Media is Good for Kids,” Gerard Jones argues that children should not be sheltered from violent stories because they use them to “meet their emotional and developmental needs” (3). Jones points out that exposing children to rage helps them “utilize” (3) it, and overcome challenges presented throughout life. It is also shown that by channeling anger through violent medias, people are able to “pull themselves out of emotional traps” (2). Jones uses several children’s accounts to demonstrate his reasoning, and one in particular highlights his findings: that violent medias in fact help children become “more self-controlled and socially competent” (3). In spite of claiming that exposure to violent medias reaps many rewards, Jones also…
