In today’s society, children of all ages are all attracted to one thing: video games. The parents of younger children believe that video games are what make children violent and that is true to some extent, but their children would not be violent in the first place if they would follow the rules and buy their children game within their age limit. They believe it is the games fault when actually their kids behavior is spawned from them allowing them to play older rated games. Games today are becoming harder and harder to play because all of the ignorant parents are buying their children games they are not supposed to play, then complaining that their children are too violent, which then increases the rating. McLuhan states that, “Our conventional response to all media, namely that is how they are used that counts, is the numb stance of the technological idiot. For the ‘content’ of a medium is like the juicy piece of meat carried by the burglar to distract the watchdog of the mind.” People are susceptible to everything they see and hear. They will believe and do almost anything the media tells them to. +Using the foundation of McLuhan’s essay “The Medium is the Message,” one can see how certain mediums affect our reactions through daily encounters.…

The ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) rates games based on their content and assigns games with a compressive rating that ranges from “Early Childhood” to “Adults only.” And with these ratings many retailers prevent underage kids form buying a rated “M” (Mature) game without parents’ permission. In conclusion I believe if violence and aggression is tied to video games we need more thorough studies done to prove this claim. Also if this is the case the system we have in place puts the responsibility on the parent to choose what their child is exposed…

One possibility of how parents can manage their child’s video game entertainment would be to give them a set amount of hours per week that they can be on their video games. Another suggestion parents can follow is simply to stay informed and know what the different ratings mean for video games (Anderson). Some media industries try to confuse parents in an effort to get them to buy a game for their child whether they can handle it or not. One thing that would help parents is if researchers could figure out how people with different demographics and mental states would react to the same violent video games (Caspari). This would allow parents and teens to get a better understanding of how a certain type of video game can impact someone from their walk of…

The rating made the game intangible for young people to go out and buy. Because young kids could not have the game with the new ratings, they just wanted to play them even more.
