Violence In Thelma And Louise

After its release in 1991, Thelma & Louise stirred up controversy mainly surrounding its connection to feminism, its use of violence, and its presentation of male characters.[i] It was criticized for its portrayal of men as one-dimensionally negative. The two heroines were accused of male bashing. It was condemned for advocating violence as a solution to women’s problems. Over twenty years later, though, I think that Thelma & Louise is most often thought of

The 1990s were arguably the best time for Romantic Comedies and also the birth era of the popular “chick-flick.” The ‘90s brought us directors like Gary Marshall and Nora Ephron whose feel good films left our hearts warm and stars like Julia Roberts with her clumsy relatability and Richard Grere with his suave demeanor. The ‘90s also brought Kathy Maio, feminist film critic. Maio’s 1991 book Popcorn and Sexual Politics is a collection of analysis of popular ‘90s films—especially Romantic Comedies. Popcorn and Sexual Politics aims to examine the role and portrayal of women on screen.…

The book “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton is a very interesting book with an important message, violence is not always the answer. This is shown in several different examples throughout the book. Most of us have seen violence even if it was a dramatic television show or in an actual real life experience, overall most of us have seen someone physically hurt. Ponyboy has seen violence throughout his life and during the experience as depicted in the book, he learns that violence is not good nor will it ever fix his problems. First, Ponyboys conversation with Randy tells us a lot about himself and what some people think about violence and the events that is going on in his life.…

In The Outsiders, violence plays an enormous role as it affects how most of the characters, like Johnny and Ponyboy, interact with each other, and how several of them perceive violence differently. Violence is present from the beginning, when Ponyboy is walking down the street by himself and he gets jumped by a group of angry Socs. Ponyboys says in the first chapter, “Greasers can’t walk alone too much or they’ll get jumped,” [10, Hinton]. Greasers know that there is violence and they accept it.…

Thelma & Louise is a US American road movie of the 90’s. It demonstrates that the road is no longer an exclusively male domain and reproduces the evolution of the position of the American women under the oppression of the patriarchal system. Critiques have often interpreted Ridley Scott’s Thelma & Louise as an attempt to understand the evolution from a traditionally male genre to the appearance of female road movies, like this one. To conclude that the road is no longer a male domain, Ridley Scott focuses on generic traits, analysis of gender, and sexual relationships. (Indurian)…

Violence has existed throughout the world; whether it be at home, at school or anywhere in society. It's an action that is initiated by the negative emotions of man. In the book The Outsiders, the author demonstrates the violence of society with two teenage groups, the Greasers and the Socs. Within these two groups, it may seem to be an unbalanced society, but many people around the world experience violence even if they are the upscale or non-wealthy members.…

Thelma and Louise, a film by Carolyn Ann Khouri, trails the liberations of two working class women in the 90’s. These women plan a weekend away from the men in their lives due to the fact that Thelma’s husband is a misogynistic man who feels that a woman’s job consists only of housework and cooking. In the first scene of the movie Thelma wants to ask her husband, Darryl, for permission to go on the trip with Louise. He yells at her and she quickly changes the subject. In my opinion, this is one of the most crucial scenes in the entire film because it outlines the sexism and discrimination that these two women will face throughout the course of the movie.…

“He was the kind of man a girl should stay fine and clean for” Esther states early in the novel, showing how women needed to present themselves for men and societies creation of inequality when comparing men and women. In contrast, Thelma and Louise’s Jimmy shows that he cares and respects Louise and her opinions. He seems to understand Louise’s decision to leave him, whereas Buddy questions Esther’s choices. The two text types also portray men who are controlling and violent towards women. This character type is largely represented in Thelma and Louise, with men who commit acts of rape, physical violence and obscene and sexual gestures towards the two protagonists of the film.…
