The Pillars Of The Earth is set in the middle of the 12th century, between the time of the sinking of the White Ship and the murder of Thomas Becket, in the fictional town Kingsbridge, England. The sinking of the White Ship is introduced with one person who seems to have survived the wreckage. Primarily during the anarchy, the historical novel is one gothic architectural setting in which violence was very prevalent in the era. Wars in the story often took place on church grounds which affected the citizens and the monks of Kingsbridge in a variety of ways, for example, leading them to question their faith - whether it was a true protection against all that is evil.
