In The Outsiders, violence plays an enormous role as it affects how most of the characters, like Johnny and Ponyboy, interact with each other, and how several of them perceive violence differently. Violence is present from the beginning, when Ponyboy is walking down the street by himself and he gets jumped by a group of angry Socs. Ponyboys says in the first chapter, “Greasers can’t walk alone too much or they’ll get jumped,” [10, Hinton]. Greasers know that there is violence and they accept it.
