Violence In S. E. Hinton's The Outsiders

“They grew up on the outside of society. They weren’t looking for a fight. They were looking to belong.” Who you ask? The greasers and the Socs in the book, “The Outsiders” written by S.E. Hinton. The two themes in the book are violence is never the answer to solve a problem and loyalty and sticking together helps everything.
A theme in the Outsiders is violence is never solves a thing that words can’t. Violence can cause a lot of harm physically and mentally. Ponyboy’s best friend, Johnny, has been mentally scarred ever since the Socs ganged up on him and really beat him good. Violence between the two gangs, Socs and Greasers, has never led to anything good, only things that are bad. One example is when a couple Socs ganged up on Ponyboy and Johnny. They

“I had never been jumped, but I had seen Johnny after the after four Socs got hold of him, and it wasn't pretty. Johnny was scared of his own shadow after that. He was sixteen then.” Johnny was permanently hurt after that and is very jumpy throughout the book. People after war sometimes have PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and get flashbacks to all the violence of the wars for the rest of their lives. Everywhere Ponyboy has to go, as well as all the greasers, they have to watch out. Socs can jump them at anytime so they should never walk alone. “Greasers can't walk alone too much or they'll get jumped, or someone will come by and scream ‘Greaser!’ at them which doesn't make you feel too hot if you know what I mean.” Imagine if you were living in the streets of Chicago and had the chance of getting jumped everywhere you go.
