This lead to a big fight as Jack had chosen his new found instincts over keeping order of maintaining the fire for rescue (69). Ralph and Piggy who still represented what was left of reasoning and government tried to resist resorting back to their primitive instincts and used reason to try and convince the other boys to do the same. Such as when Piggy stated "Which is better- to be a pack of painted Indians like you are, or to be sensible like Ralph is?" (180) or Ralph trying to make them understand the need for fire throughout chapter four. Even Ralph the character who seemed to be most intact with his learned behavior had moments in which human nature took over. For example when Ralph witnessed the killing of Simon (153) he was tempted by his

Ralph has been the primary representation of the civilization and order within the novel and with this, he was able to repress the savagery temptations, but soon enough, he begins to succumb to this nature. This was first seen when he wounded the pig and shouted, “I hit him all right. The spear stuck in. I wounded him” (Golding 113)! Although he was able to repress them for a while, he is no different from the other boys on the island since they are still all adolescents and are not immune to the evil that resides within them.…

The attitudes of others towards Piggy symbolize anti-intellectualism in not just uncivilized but civilized society as well. Jack’s disdain for Piggy emphasizes the former; Ralph’s ignorance of Piggy at the beginning the latter—the wild hungry savage and the strong handsome leader respectively abusing and ignoring the more intelligent but weaker. Ralph initially looks down on Piggy. During their first meeting, after Ralph tells Piggy his name, Piggy “waited to be asked his name in turn but this proffer of acquaintance was not made” (Golding 9). By not even bothering to learn Piggy’s name, Ralph is essentially distances himself from Piggy.…

Nature, biological factors such as the brain and emotional development, also plays a role to their savage and immoral behavior. Although the boys are pressured by their peers, they are also influenced by their own conscious genetically or mentally to act the way they act. For example, naturally Piggy always adds his two cents or talk about the decisions made by Ralph after they come to an understanding. “Which is better-- to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill?” (Piggy 180), he questions their ability to be indecisive and argue while he is trying to comprehend their reason for a disagreement.…

Lord of Flies was a novel written by William Golding which explored the notion that humans are not wholly maleficent—though they possess a streak of barbarism; later events in the novel manifested the exact notion. The chapter opened with Ralph roaming on the island. The island can be taken as a foil to the urbane world— where cities teem with culture, advancement and secured from the different agents of nature and hunger. A constant wave of ‘heat’ surrounded the island with thousands of weeds and rocks lying around —a life threat for characters, for instance, Piggy’s knee was scratched by the thorns initially.…

“Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, is probably one of the most interesting pieces I have read. The kids all seem nice and fun, like kids, in the beginning but throughout the story that changes, they begin to “mature.” Violence starts, people begin to take sides, a lot more fear is coming along.…
