Violence By Kayvan Sabehgi

From what I read in the book and watching the video, a lot of societies use violence in one form or another as a means of social control. From the video, Kayvan Sabehgi was beaten the police officer for not obeying what the police officer wanted him to do. In this scenario I think that the police officer retaliated to violence as a means of control in this situation and a way to set example for others if they try to retaliate against them as well. From the reading one example that I found most interesting was the Kohistani who “follow a code that demands vengeance against any threat to a man’s honor”, which is a way that men follow rules in society or else there could be dire consequences. The text talked about the story of Omar and how he was killed for staring at another man’s wife, so in that society violence is a way of enacting the “code” they follow. …show more content…
Many people don’t retaliate when they are fearful of the consequences if they involve violence or see someone else have something violent happen to them for not following the rules/laws. It also is probably the easiest way to control people if they have reason to believe they will be harmed. I don’t think violence is necessary, because, like the book stated, there are some societies that are considered peaceful like the Ju/wasi, but they also have different characteristics/culture than that of Western Society. Also, I don’t think that people should automatically resort to violence when trying to control a situation because nothing productive comes from acting in a violent way and it just causes more harm than

Nate Londa's visual piece depicts a gray and dreary background with a toddler still in his or her diaper turning on the tv to watch violence through war, fighting, gun-play, and destruction. Below the errie illustration, the title is in bold letters, "Silence the Violence"(Londa). The picture creates the argument that children still in their diapers can be exposed to an array of violence through media and can become aggressive by watching such programs. The drawing is powerful, and so are the words and facts at the top of the piece. The words and the picture include all the foundations of designing a persuasive argument: logos, pathos, and ethos.…

When the Towers Fell, We Took a Stand In a recent Ted talk presentation, executive director of the Albert Einstein Institution, Jamila Raqib, discusses how she knows the secret on how to resolve conflict in a non-violent technique. She goes on to state how there are over one hundred techniques of non-violent actions that can be taken to resolve harsh issues instead of using violence. Although I understand what she is saying and agree to a certain extent, I think living during the time of a terrorist attack has made me realize there are certain circumstances that can only be handled with violence. If we as a country did not result to violence and retaliate against Bin Laden, our country would have lived in constant fear, there would have been more attacks organized by him, and other terrorists from other locations would have seen our country as weak and possibly set forth plans to attack us also.…

Civil disobedience is widely known to play an important role in the formation and progression of the civilized world. Resistance to unjust laws, if done peacefully, impacts the free society positively because it urges a government to distribute freedoms generously while simultaneously maintaining balance within the legal system. Henry David Thoreau stated, "That government is best which governs least" in his essay titled Civil Disobedience. He explained the vital role civil disobedience plays in society while demonstrating how it can be easily distorted to mean that a good government doesn’t govern at all. Thoreau’s case was pertinent to the predicament of slavery during his time, highlighting the “moral tinge” to the idea of fair government.…

“Violence as a way of achieving racial justice is both impractical and immoral. It is impartial because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all…” I strongly agree with this quote said by Martin Luther King Jr. Violence is a very concerning issue in the past, present and certainly in the film “Do The Right Thing”. It is my personal belief that you cannot achieve anything by violence and that it only brings major unwanted consequences into our lives. The film “Do The Right Thing” illustrates the difference between violence and counter-violence and the diverse consequences they each convey. Violence is the act of physical force toward someone to hurt them and in cases kill them, in order to gain power.…

According to Girard (1979), violence has tendency to hoard in one place which can lead to “fundamental truth about violence’ is that, ‘if left unappeased, violence will accumulate until it overflows its confines and floods the surrounding area.” With the lack of rule of law, or the presence of the super-ego, which balances both the id and the ego, ‘Man’ will naturally turn to a savage or the id will dominate over the superego. (Wilson, 2014). Rules prevents the domination of the id and suppresses man’s evilness within his heart. Therefore, if rules become non-existent, balance and harmony will cease and humans will now show their evil side that they had long restrained within themselves.…

There are many ways humans cope with oppression, violence is what many people decide on. Force against oppression is not immoral, because when the oppressed fight back, there is a possibility to win, self defense, and if they don’t use force it still hurts the oppress. For instance, the oppressed have a probability to win if they fight back. In 1799, the French Revolution ended and the oppressed got wh8=9at they wanted, they didn’t win by pacifism; they won with violence.…
