However, because Native lives and voices have been drowned out over centuries, it is important to allow for a reclamation of language. Author of The Beginning and End of Rape: Confronting Sexual Violence in Native America, Sarah Deer, disagrees with the portrayal of assault towards Native women as an epidemic. As per the Merriam Webster Dictionary, an epidemic is: “affecting or tending to affect a disproportionately large number of individuals within a population, community, or region at the same time.” Deer argues that an epidemic has connotations of disease, bacteria, and a relatively short-lived and isolated issue. In naming the violence against Native women an “epidemic,” one is robbing the women of the justice necessary to combat this social and oppressive cycle.
