Typically, a hug (between friends and family) last no longer than a few seconds. It is only in certain situations hugs can be extended for a period of time (e.g. a hug for comfort to ease someone’s distress or emotional pain). I decided that I would hug the friends that I recently made at this program for an extended amount of time, including back rubs and pats. I thought of this idea because I have been hugged by people for slightly too long and became uncomfortable. I had wanted to see if other people became unfortable like me. At first I was very surprised about how easily my new friends let me hug them. I thought they would have been confused at such an out of the blue request. An initial awkwardness was felt when the hug was extended but I quickly became comfortable with the situation and my friends did not seem fazed by the experience. When we pulled apart, most of my friends would laugh, nodding in understanding as I explain why I hugged them for so long. There was no air of awkwardness
