Violate The Norm Analysis

Improved Essays
The norm that I chose to violate was not speaking to people in what we consider a “normal” tone of voice. This norm acts as a mechanism of social control by accepting a normal tone of voice as a response from someone on a daily basis. It is accepted by society to use a different tone of voice than usual depending on the situation you are facing or the environment you are surrounded by. For this reason, people automatically predict that when they are interacting with a person it will be in a normal tone of voice. Therefore, to violate the norm I chose to whisper every time a person spoke to me and whenever I spoke to a person without any given reason.
To begin my experiment I was in the basement of my dorm in which I decided to participate in

As I continued to whisper during conversations everyone still made weird and confused faces, but I also noticed that it caused them to also respond by whispering. In addition they did not realize that they were doing it. Finally, they started to question me whether I was sick and had a sore throat. They would also try to guess the reason for me whispering. My close friend started to become concerned on why I was whispering. I denied all of their predictions and just told my friend was nothing to worry about, so she after that she did not take me serious.
As I was violating the normal tone of voice in the situation I was in, I felt kind of outcasted. I felt that way because everyone would have conversations and when I started a conversation with them they would look at me weird. When I was violating the norm, I did not really know what to expect on how people would react. It was really difficult trying to keep a straight face when whispering especially when I noticed that people whispered back to me I thought it was pretty funny. Something I learned about this norm is the way people form what is an accepted and not accepted tone of voice regarding the situation. I found it very interesting the reactions I got especially how some people would respond back

We as human beings live together in large groups who follow certain rules and regulations, both written and simply unspoken but known. Most of these rules we just accept for what they are and do not really pay much attention to them. We go along with what “the norm” is for life because it is easier to live that way rather than challenging how things work. However, if we take the time to sit and really think about what is socially acceptable and what is not, some may begin to question the fairness and legitimacy of these rules. How we interact with other groups of people is a great example of what is sometimes socially acceptable but morally wrong.…

For this sociological experiment I broke the norm that led to the ¨personal bubble¨ rule, by getting, “too close¨ to strangers when I talk to them by society's standards. This social norm shows that people are used to having their own space and not having others be within a certain distance. When you talk or interact with another person you both are in control of the personal space given. This leads to me testing others by stepping over boundaries to make them feel uncomfortable, nervous, or embarrassed.…

I performed this folkway violation on on 10/12/16, in the media center after school. Tommy nguyen was the one who observed the social experiment on wednesday when I went up to the group of teenagers in the media center. They completely ignored/ accepted it as normal and didn't even notice that I came up to them and started talking with them. I was so surprised at that because usually people are weirded out and or give you a nasty grin or mean look. This really shocked me that some people don’t care if they get interrupted.…

The Grocery Shopping Norm Invading someone’s personal space, shaking hands when you meet someone, and saying “thank you” when someone does something nice for you are all examples of social norms that most people practice. A social norm is a rule of behavior that is expected or considered acceptable in a group or society. From early childhood, we are taught many different social norms on how to act in a given environment or situation. Although most people follow the same social norms, some people do not.…

I learned that breaking social norms is frowned upon by society very much. Societal norms are so set when an individual steps outside of those norms he/she is looked at as an outsider who should know better and follow the rules. Some social norms can be broken depending on sanction. For example, church is a formal sanction, there may be members that begin to shout or break out into dance in response to the feeling that overwhelms them from the music or the message that the minister may be preaching as opposed to when a person in a classroom setting he/she cannot just get up and start dancing or yelling across the classroom because the setting is different and the person will be looked as someone who is going against what it's supposed to be…

The more subtle responses and facial expression were from the entire group, which also included an Asian American female, an African American female and a Mexican American female. The people seated next to us included an African American couple, which appeared to be in their early to mid fifties, and two Caucasian men. One of the men appeared to be late 30s to early 40s and the other was early to mid 40s. It was one of the two younger gentlemen at the table next to us that responded verbally to my behavior. Everyone in his or her party quietly talked amongst him or herself, stared, and made facial expression in disgust toward my behavior.…

I now have lost most of my accent through force - a better attempt to try and fit in with the people around me so I would not be teased as frequently - but the longer I am away from Texas, the more I miss it. The more I begin to feel homesick and saddened at the fact that I am no longer who I once was and proud to be that person. I felt forced to conceal my true self for so long, that the façade actually began to become the me I am today.…

Breaking a social norm might seem easy, yet when it’s time to actually break it it’s nerve wracking. On a Wednesday afternoon around 1:30, Jerry and I lunched at Chili’s located in Miami Gardens. Approximately, there were about 12-15 observers not including the waiters. Because the bar area was the most crowded area in the restaurant, I decided to lunch there. Majority of the population were African-American male and female, yet there were a couple of white observers.…

How people react towards someone who breaks an everyday society’s idea of a social norm can vary in many different ways all depending on the situation, the people surrounding the incident and who is breaking the norm. I, wearing pajamas in public setting such as the mall, my mother office, in my neighborhood and general popular places around town caused many to quite surprising reactions from my peers, family, strangers and friends. Sometimes people’s reactions are quite subtle and they tend not to show any interest in a change of action at all. However, at other times a person reaction to an alteration in the social norm can be quite large and exaggerated. Walking in public settings in a town that I grew up in (e.g. shopping centre, squares,…

We noticed a variety of different reactions when we broke this non-verbal communication rule that included people verbally communicating that we did something that was not socially accepted. The other reactions that we noticed included paralanguage such as whispers from one person to the other that someone cut them as well as grunts and loud exhales to communicate their reaction to what we were doing (Wood, 2016, p. 150). Another reaction that was fairly common was silence. Many people that we encountered on line reacted with silence. This reaction communicated the awkwardness that existed from us breaking a non-verbal communication rule and people not knowing how to react to it (Wood, 2016, p. 151).…

Omar, Derrick Bennett here I know it's really late in the normality of most everyone's day to day life. But for me getting ripped out of bed for a tone (911 call) involving an elderly woman feeling severe chest pains, or complaining of hemiparesis of the left or right side depending on the day, and last but not least has fallen and can't get up from a busted hip" this is my norm. Now by most choosing this profession one would call you bonkers, demented, deranged, mental, and rightfully so. For the last 3 1/2 years this crazy hour call is consistently made by the same elderly lady.…
