Viola Desmond was born on July 6th, 1914 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. She lived there for the majority of her childhood and part of her adult life. She was into a large family, of 10 children. She experienced numerous major events, whether it went down in history or was a personal accomplishment. One of the events was witnessing the Halifax Explosion with her 2 other siblings at the time in 1917. Another important event was when she sat down to stand up against racism on November 8, 1946 in the Roseland Theatre. She fought against the racism she and other black people received by refusing to leave her seat when she was in the whites’ only section. The explanation behind this word is to be a pioneer, or one of the first of your race or kind to do something. For example, she was known as one of the first ever trailblazers of colored races being beauticians. Another person that helped this cause was C.J. Walker. She was even inspired to become a beautician because of Walker. She paved the path for other young women, and anyone for that matter, to even have the slightest chance of becoming a beautician if they wanted to. Even now, over five decades after her death, she is still remembered as a trailblazer and a pioneer for people’s rights and to get the same opportunities as everyone else. The reason I know this is true is because she dedicated her life to giving other people opportunities to become beauticians. This is why she was a
