Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night Over The Rhone

A fine example of beautiful art is, Vincent Van Gogh’s painting Starry Night Over the Rhone was created in 1888. Other than this particular piece Van Gogh created large assortment of night paintings because “…before he became an artist, Vincent van Gogh was fascinated by the cycles of nature and human life and the times of day.” (Van Gogh and The Colors of the Night. 9) He was looking to capture the emotions and feelings of the times. Gogh’s work appeals to us not only for it being pleasing to the eye, but also cultural significance. A viewer can find a particular fascination in this because “Under the open skies, Van Gogh perceived the formidable forces of nature that give humanity a sense of eternity and provide consolation in this hard word…” (Van Gogh and The Colors of the Night. 12) It is a depiction of true beauty because of its ability to not only touch the heart and conscious but also the mind. …show more content…
It is set on the waterfront of Aries, France on a starry night. As with much of Van Gogh’s work it is made in such a way that the texture on the canvas is noticeable. Both in its flow and it’s brushstrokes. . “The nervous, almost frenetic, use of brushstrokes makes the painting come alive.” (Reality Through the Arts. 32) The glowing quality on the waters reflects in the light to give off a passionate feeling of vibrant life in its time. The lines are curved at an angle and almost rarely straight, they flow on the canvas. It makes the feeling of being on the water so much more
