The painting is a view from his room in the asylum. This painting is an oil painting on canvas. He painted it looking out his window which faced the east. Van Gogh decided how he was going to do a painting by the weather outside. This includes sunny, moonrise, overcast days, windy days, and some rainy days. In 1889 Van Gogh painted one of his most famous paintings called “Irises”. Within a week after he moved to the asylum he studied the movements of the flowers, then later created the painting. He studied the flowers carefully then made varieties of curved, wavy, twisted, curling lines that made silhouettes that are the irises. “Road of Etten” is a painting done out of chalk, pencil, pastels, and watercolors. In 1881 Vincent decided to move to Etten for a little bit. There he made many drawings of things he saw throughout the town. “Road of Etten” was a sketch of a man sweeping in the street lined with many trees called pollard willows. Another famous painting is called “Cafe Terrace at Night” which is also called “Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum”. This was a colored oil painting made in Arles, France in mid- September 1888. Around the same time Van Gogh also created “The Night Cafe” which was painted for the owner of the cafe. “The Church at Auvers” which was painted in 1890 is one of the most famous paintings he had done, it is now hanging in Musee d’Orsay, a museum in Paris, France on the left bank of the Seine. In 1890 he painted “Sorrowing Old Man” which shows a man sitting at eternity’s gate. He painted this one in Saint-Remy de Provence. “Sunset at Montmajor” was painted in July 1888, it is a landscape of garrigue with Montmajour Abbey in the background. Montmajour Abbey was a building that was built in the 10th and 18th centuries. When Vincent van Gogh first painted “Sunflowers Came into Bloom” no one wanted the paintings. He painted four images of the

During 1905, artists such as Henri Matisse, André Derain, and Maurice de Vlaminck created Fauvist work. The word Fauve, “made particular reference to these artists’ brilliant, arbitrary color, more intense than the “scientific” color of the Neo-Impressionists and the non-descriptive color of Gauguin and Van Gogh” (92). I chose to recreate a painting by Van Gogh, an artist I have always admired for his distinctive technique and variety of works; and the picture I chose was one of the seven paintings by him in the series of "The Sunflowers". Unlike the original painting, which was painted with oils on canvas, I decided to use a different type of paints, acrylics; a technique with which I am familiar uy and enjoy it more than others.…

Both of these influential painters were a part of artistic movements, experienced depression, and created many pieces, but were not well-known during their lifetimes; they even are considered outcasts in society. Claude Monet is considered one of the most prolific French painters of the 19th century and a founding father of the Impressionist movement. It was Monet’s ability to repaint seemingly similar landscape scenes while effectively differentiating each paining’s symbolic meaning and memorializing these varying variations of color and fleeting effects of light and seasonal weather changes that truly distinguishes his style of painting from other painters. In order to gain greater insight into the evolution and impact of Claude Monet’s painting style, I thoroughly examined three of his most distinctive artworks painted during the time period of 1870-1890 on exhibit at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, CA and will focus my discussion upon the similarities and differences between these paintings which demonstrate Monet’s earlier and later painting styles.…
