Van Gogh liked to use colour and show natures beauty this is also shown in this piece. You can see in the sky it's not left plain blue he has emphasised the stars that were shining that night. Also he has emphasised nature once again with the reflecting light on the water which makes the water more beautiful then before. With colour he shows us how beautiful city's can be at night with the reflection off the water.

Cafe Terrace at Night
My interpretation of Cafe Terrace at Night Van Gogh used colours that contrasted together. The dark of the night was cancelled out by the interior light of the cafe. The yellow in the painting draws the eye along the pavement as if the person looking at the painting is really there walking along the painting. Also the light of the cafe is welcoming it shows hope and homeliness. Again Van Gogh love for nature and colour is shown again. He shows nature again in the sky where he shows the nights sky's is their true beauty making sure their not left

From when I first saw it to now I do see the sadness in it. with the use of colors, I do see it now as him being in a depressed state of mind. Van Gogh uses color in a very deliberate and effective way in The Night Café. He selects the colors not based on his visual interpretation of the room but on the psychological and emotional effects it has on its occupants. He explains to his brother Theo, in a letter, that he uses the red and green in an attempt to express the terrible passions of human nature. The use of these colors helps to illustrate the intensity of the Café de la Gare and provoke the emotions of the viewer who may relate the bar scene to alcoholism or depression. He also balances the wooden browns and yellows of the lower half of the painting with a dark wooden clock adorned with a vibrant yellow face at the top of the painting.…

His color choices give the main focal point (the tree) and the focal area (moon) lots of emphasis. The moon being the brightest value and the tree being the darkest value and the hills being in the middle of the composition and value spectrum, make a unity for the background, middle ground and foreground. The Moon and stars show the time of the piece being night time. The perspective we are given for this image makes the proportions of this image pretty accurate. If Van Gogh had not used the addition of reds in this image it would be a very muted cool piece and with the use of all the nature it would be unbalanced.…
