Vincent van Gogh

On March 30, 1853, Vincent van Gogh was born in Zundert, Netherlands ("Vincent Van Gogh Biography", par. 1). Little did anyone know that this young man would turn into a world renown artist. Van Gough is best known as being a Dutch post-impressionist artist (painter). From then on his art flourished, up until his death on July 29, 1890. His time spent on his art was used as an outlet to keep him emotionally balanced during his moments of coping with his mental illness, and was not well known until his later years of life. He produced more than 2,100 works, consisting of 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolors, drawings and sketches ("Vincent Van Gogh Biography", par. 21). Van Gough’s work will forever live on and be best known for its beauty, color, and emotion, through various techniques known today as impasto, perspective frame usage, and painting from memory (Lanka, par. 1). Whenever she listed these artists she always seemed to mention Vincent van Gough. I honestly had no clue as to who he was, but I did know that he was the man behind the brush that created the famous art piece titled “The Starry Night.” Ever since I seen that specific art piece I was absolutely intrigued. He definitely has a way of using technique and strokes in various directions that creates a type of movement and form in each of his pieces. This technique can be seen throughout all of his work, even in his self-portraits. I definitely appreciate this about him, because it makes me feel that he is not afraid to go against the grain of what people view as being normal (brush strokes in the same direction).
