Vincent van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853. He was born in Groot-Zundert, Holland. “He was named after his grandfather and stillborn brother who died a year earlier than Van Gogh’s birth” (Riter). He was the oldest child of Theodorus van Gogh, which was a pastor in the Dutch Reformed Community, and his mother was Anna Cornelia Carbentus. Gogh grew up in a very religious family, and his father was a very strict man. “His father was a quiet, dignified, ordinary man, from whom Gogh inherited nothing but a burning desire to enter the Church” (Meier-Graefe 1). Gogh had five siblings which included two brothers, and three sisters.
The two brother’s names were Theodorus and Cornelius. His three sister’s names were Anna Cornelia, Elisabeth Huberta, and Willemina Jacoba. His brother Theodorus, was like a brother to him, and became his closest family member. Theodorus actually stayed in contact with him his whole life. In July 1869 he left his family to start an apprenticeship at Goupil & Cie an international arts dealer located in Paris.

A painting that shows his view from the east-facing window of the asylum room he was in. This painting you will see pretty much everywhere in the art world. Another painting that comes to mind is the Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear (1889). This is when Gogh was painting his self-portraits, and after the argument with his roommate. The last one is the Vase with Twelve Sunflowers (1888). This is one of the many paintings he painted in the yellow house. This is the sunflowers he was painting in his room-mates room before he moved in. He ended up painting three additional copies of the sunflower painting. Gogh’s work during his lifetime wasn’t as popular as it is today, however his artwork can be seen in museums across the world
