“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together” was once said by a great man named Vincent Van Gogh. Van Gogh’s personal information, his mental illness, his art style, and my personal thought on one of his magnificent paintings is just a small part of this bright eyed person.

This painting was painted in Arles, France. The style of this art piece is a seascape. When Van Gogh was painting the water of this intriguing painting he used thick brush strokes with many different shades of blue, white, yellow and even a little bit of green to get the color of the ocean. I think Van Gogh used these colors because these colors look like the color of the sea. The colors made nice contrast but if you look close at the picture it doesn’t seem like the colors will work together, when you look at the whole picture the colors match. Also, he painted the brush strokes in opposite directions so it can get the texture and look of the ocean. I saw that on some of the brush strokes curved it to get the wavy look of the ocean. Behind the first boat instead of doing many strokes of paint he did a few long strokes to show that the water was fading away in the distance. On the first boat he added an astonishing amount of detail to make it look realistic, from the strokes on the brush to the less than a millimeter wide dots. I personally think Vincent Van Gogh is one of the best artists that have ever lived. This particular artwork made me feel calm because it was a painting of water with a couple of sail boats and not any big

It all blends in with each other. The girls on both the right side and the left side are all the same shade of color. Their shapes are elongated and seem to emerge from the rocks. All of the seamen on the boat and the sails are a dark color and mixes together to make it look like there is not much detail in the painting when there actually is. The sky is very dark and gloomy which makes it seem like something bad…

It is very wavey and has a mixture of orange and black. The subtle mixtures of black in the sky can show how the world is not entirely one dimensional im emotions. It shows that the world has both joy and fear. The surroundings of water are also very unique as they constantly curve. The curvatures of the painting represents how there is a lot of “texture” in…

The work loosely reminds me of Vincent Van Gogh's works. The style is similar to his Starry Night, where each brush stroke is clear, and the different colors of paint are immersed within each other. This style makes the work seems as if it is an unstable blur. It is not very detailed or life like. Time and Motion: I believe both time and motion are a huge part of this work.…

He painted on a 73.3 x 53.8 size canvas so to maintain the proportions of the original print he left a border, which was then decorated with Japanese characters painted in red on top of green paint, that Van Gogh copied from other artists’ print. Van Gogh makes the water much more detailed in his painting and in addition, gives it a wider range of colours, rather than in the original print where just one shade of colour is used. He also depicted the people walking on the bridge in his painting in…

He expressed in his letters how he went to different places to experience new things and use them when diving into his work. Van Gogh was telling a person in one of his letter that “...you know that I came to the south and threw myself in work for a thousand reasons-looking for a different light, believing that observing nature under a brighter sky might give one a more accurate idea of the way Japanese feel and draw”(“Visit the Museum”). The artist is curious on how the Japanese felt when they drew or painted and he wanted to use this style in his own art. For instance, he needed to know how it felt under the new sun or the brighter sky because without these observations he felt that he would not fully understand the pictures of a fellow artist named Delacroix, technique wise at least. But, looking at this idea of creativity described by Hayakawa it proves that Van Gogh fit into the…

There is strong use of color in the painting. Because the majority of the work is different values of blue, the opposing colors are emphasized. The ship in the sea is emphasized because it is black, while the surrounding colors are blue. This makes the ship a central focus of the piece. The similar colors in the painting also creates unity.…

His color choices give the main focal point (the tree) and the focal area (moon) lots of emphasis. The moon being the brightest value and the tree being the darkest value and the hills being in the middle of the composition and value spectrum, make a unity for the background, middle ground and foreground. The Moon and stars show the time of the piece being night time. The perspective we are given for this image makes the proportions of this image pretty accurate. If Van Gogh had not used the addition of reds in this image it would be a very muted cool piece and with the use of all the nature it would be unbalanced.…
