Vincent van Gogh

The artist I have selected is Vincent van Gogh. Vincent Willem van Gogh was born on March 30th, 1853, in Holland. Vincent was the oldest surviving child of Theodorus and Anna van Gogh. Vincent was a very common name in the van Gogh family. His grandfather, his uncle, and a still-born brother who was born a year to the day before him were all named Vincent. Much like his father, Vincent was one of 6. There was Vincent, two brothers, Theodorus “Theo”, Cal, and three sisters, Elisabeth, Anna, and Wilhelmien “Wil”

Vincent was quoted as saying “What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything?” So, Vincent moved to Paris to be with his brother and try to further his career as a painter. Little did Vincent know one day many of the no name painters that were in Paris at the time did end up making it big. Sense Vincent and Theo were living together, there was no need for them to write letters to each other. With no letters to look back on we have no way to know much about Vincent’s time in Paris. We do know that during his stay he collected more japanese art work with the bright vibrant coloring. In his two year stay, he painted over 200 pieces. Once van Gogh thought he had captured Paris as best he could, He moved. “Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.” - Vincent van Gogh. He got a hotel room hoping it would be like a painting he had seen once. Arles, which was rather exotic and filthy, was like a foreign country to van Gogh. In a letter Vincent said “The Zouaves, the brothels, the adorable little Arlesiennes going to their First Communion, the priest in his surplice, who looks like a dangerous rhinoceros, the people drinking absinthe, and all seem to me creatures from another world.” Clearly van Gogh felt like a total outsider. One of his most famous paintings was from his time in Arles, It is named “Bedroom in Arles.”

I find a lot of irony as I research van Gogh. Firstly, he was so poor that his brother, Theo, had to support him, yet now all of his works are worth millions of dollars. One of the cheapest I could find was being sold for $11.8 million. Everyone says that the best thing an artist can do for their career is to die, maybe it is true. Another ironic thing I found is that van Gogh said “I dream of painting, and then i paint my dream.” Apparently he paints where he dreams too, because three of his famous paintings are of a bedroom he stayed in, in

“A true artist is not one who is inspired, but one who inspires others,” were the wise words of a true iconic artist, Salvador Dali. Each major artist perceived reality in their own way and the reality expressed in their art did, in fact, inspire many other artists. Whether reality was seen as Surrealist, abstract-like, or a way to bring insignificant items to an obscure size, Claes Oldenburg, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Salvador Dali each effected a plethora of generations of artists. The most famous artist of the Surrealism movement was the Spaniard Salvador Dali. His paintings appear to be illogical and sexual.…

When one hears the name ‘Salvador Dali’, one can’t help but think of the surrealist movement. The two have become so intertwined, it’s hard to discard the cemented association. After all, it was Dali who would bring attention and recognition to the movement. It’s important to note that the surrealist school is known for dismissing what was previously valued, like technique and grandiose, and taking on a new subject matter - all things taboo. Dali's major contribution to the Surrealist movement was the invention of the 'psycho technique', a method he called 'critical paranoia'.…
