When I took Art Appreciation back in high school, my art teacher, Jane Huebner, also known as “Heebs had told us a quote that I can still remember to this day; I need da money to buy da gas to make the Van Gogh. From there on out I started to like this artist that had stood out to me. This artist was Vincent Willem Van Gogh. He is known as a post-impressionist artist still to this day (2). He had a not so great life and had only sold one painting (4). Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853 in the Netherlands (2). His family consisted of Theodorus Van Gogh (the father), Anna Cornelia Carbentus (the mother), Theo Van Gogh (the younger brother), Elizabeth Van Gogh (the sister), and last but not last Vincent Van Gogh (the older brother). (2&4). With Vincent's mental illness he was able to go back to painting, where he had created his famous painting, "Starry Night" (which is my favorite). When I saw this quote, Look, I have had another dream' he said, 'I thought I saw the sun, the moon and eleven stars, bowing to me (Genesis 37:9), Van Gogh had painted his Starry Night painting in the hospital (1). He used his memory instead of the outdoors. An artist that can do that is absolutely talented. He had many mental break downs where he tried to eat his own paints, which he however recovered from that. He had left the hospital and had taken an overnight train to Paris. On July 27, 1890 a tragic day had occurred when he was out in this field. He shot himself in the chest (2). Sadly, he died two days later. Starry Night is one of my favorite artworks. When I look at it, I see nothing but pure relaxation as I see at night when I look at the dark black sky full of little dots (stars). I pictured myself on the beach back when I lived in Virginia at night. I could hear the roaring wave’s splash on the soft sand and just watch the water glisten as the moon reflected on the ocean. I found this song on YouTube by Don McLean. It is titled Vincent (Starry, Starry Night). When I heard it, it just took me sailing away as if I was back in Virginia all over again.
