Vincent van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853 in Holland. His father was a pastor and his mother was an artist. At age 15 his family forced him to get a job because they were struggling financially. He worked at his Uncle’s art dealership. By this time, van Gogh was fluent in French, German, English, and his native Dutch.

In 1873, van Gogh worked at the Groupil Gallery in London. He fell in love with Eugenie Loyer. Van Gogh suffered a breakdown when she rejected his marriage proposal. He devoted his life to God and threw away all of his books except for the Bible. He became angry and told customers not to buy the "worthless art". He was eventually fired.

In the fall of 1880, van Gogh moved to Brussels and decided to become an artist. Though he had no formal art training, his brother Theo, an art dealer, offered to support him financially. He began studying art books on his own. He fell in love with Clasina Maria Hoornik, an alcoholic prostitute. Van Gogh became very depressed when Hoornik went back to prostitution. His family threatened to cut him off unless he left her. Van Gogh left and moved to a desolate town in the Netherlands. He roamed through the countryside and drew the landscape and its people.

In Paris, van Gogh met Pissarro, Monet, and Gauguin. He tried to imitate the Impressionist techniques. He lightened his dark palette and used short brush strokes. Van Gogh was unsuccessful in copying the style, so he developed his own bold and different
