Vincent van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853 in Groot-Zundert Netherlands. His father Theodorus van Gogh was a minister. His mother Anna Cornelia Carbentus was a moody artist whose love of nature, drawing and watercolors was transferred to her son Van Gogh. Gogh was born exactly one year after his parent’s first son also named Vincent but he was stillborn. When Gogh was 15 his family was poor so he had drop out of school and start work. He worked for his uncle Cornelis ’at his art dealership. He learned many things working for his uncle. This is where Van Gogh learned and learned more about French, German, and English as well as his native language Dutch. At 20 year old Van Gogh transferred to Groupil Gallery in London. There he was introduced and fell in love with the English culture. He spent spare time in art galleries and he also became a big fan of the writings of Charles Dickens and George Elliot. He also fell in love with his landlord’s daughter Eugenie Loyer. When he proposed she rejected his marriage proposal. He went crazy he threw away all of his books but the bible and devoted his life to Christ. He told customers at work not to buy the artwork. He was eventually fired from his job. At The Yellow House, van Gogh hoped artists like him could create together. Gauguin did join him but he didn’t help at all. Toward the end of 1988 Gauguin walked out of the operation and Van Gogh went after him with a razor but ended up cutting a portion of his own ear lobe off. He then went and paid for a prostitute and gave offered his ear to her and asked her to keep it carefully. He was discovered in his room the next day by police.
