The video mainly focused on how Western art was affected by Eastern culture and art. Famous artist like Van Gogh, Da Vinci and more all show signs of having converging cultures in their work, and especially in the 18th and 19th century when impressionism became popular. The painting I am going to be discussing that has cross convergence is Vincent Van Gogh’s Self-portrait with Bandage Ear. Impressionism was based off of eastern artwork with a western artwork twist to it. Vincent Van Gogh is known for impressionism and Self-portrait with Bandage Ear, was finished January of 1889 and sized in at 60cm x 49cm. After the film had aired, both Theo van Gogh and Hirsi Ali received thousands of death threats, which resulted in the murder of Theo Van Gogh and the seclusion of Hirsi Ali. According to some scholars, Theo van Gogh’s troubled history with the Muslim community justified the leaders blaming the film that for spreading Islam phobia. Theo van Gogh was a well-known Dutch filmmaker/author and is the great grand nephew of the famous painter Vincent van Gogh. Unfortunately, Theo van Gogh was not famous for his well written books or inspiring documentaries but rather for his controversial outspoken opinions on Muslims, Jews and Christians or as I say the “former Donald Trump” of his time.…

Jan Van Eyck is the father of oil painting during the fifteenth century Northern Renaissance during this period artists would paint oil on wood, and within their paintings would be hidden or disguised symbolism. Man in a Red Turban painting represents a middle-age man in a three-quarters pose. Warm light bathes distinctive face emerging from the dark background of the painting which revels every facial feature of the man. Man gazes out to view, and with the slight strain about the eyes which may have come from gazing into a mirror, which could suggest the painting may be a self-portrait. “The motto “ALS ICH KAN” or “As I can” “As best I can” appears on other works perhaps challenging other artists to do better; for he has done all he can”…

Considering this phenomenon, an artwork I chose to write about that you can see this in is Vincent van Gogh’s canvas painting Bridge in the Rain. In 1886 Van Gogh moved to Paris and was introduced to Japonism and ukiyo-e because his brother ran an art gallery and he lived next to one. He was fascinated with the designs, colors, and compositions of the artwork he had seen in Japonisme work and started collecting ukiyo-e prints. In 1887, he was inspired by a Japanese landscape painter, Utagawa Hiroshige, and started creating his oil painting.…
