Vincent van Gogh was born in March of 1853. Van Gogh was one of six children, he was the son of a dutch pastor. Vincent 's mom was said to be rather cold and have a dark nature( James 78). Vincent van Gogh was a post-Impressionist painter whose work had a lasting influence on 20th-century art. His output includes many portraits,including self portraits, landscapes and still life 's of cypresses, and wheat fields. Most of the post impressionist artists paintings consisted of paintings of nature and people. After many failures of trying to find his place in the world Van Gogh turned to painting again in which he found that he was able to communicate his experiences. A few months after his fathers death is when he Vincent created his painting the “ The Potato Eaters”.After his fathers death van Gogh 's painting were starting to be appreciated in Paris.“The Potato Eaters”was made in 1885 when he was just thirty two years old. Five years later after his painting of “The Potato Eaters” Van Gogh thought of himself as a failure and an outcast of society and as an artist. It was said that Vincent had no social life, but would wander off on his own (James 79). Which would then lead him to feel lonely and he would walk around for hours just looking at everything. Vincent said that “It is not the language of painters but the language of the feeling of the things themselves, for reality is more important than the feeling of pictures”(Gogh 3). What he is saying here is that its the feeling he gets from the main subject of his paintings, that the way he gets his interpretation of the scene.
