Village Of Obses: A Short Story

Improved Essays
Village of Obses Today is Wednesday normally I would be at the training center to improve my swordsmanship, but Father has called a meeting which I am required to attend. Normally I would be dreading the meeting, but today I hope for information about my brother. Bryn left two weeks ago for a trade errand for our Father and has yet to return. I am starting to worry.
Today’s meeting isn’t starting until 11 o’clock so I have decided to visit my friend Arian. I head out into the village right after finishing breakfast. I have no choice if I wish to have a reasonable amount of time to speak with her. I live on top of a hill that looks over the whole village. I imagine it was built here because my ancestors wished to send a message of them being

I am alerted by the loud ringing of the bell that alerts everyone to the start of the meeting. I walk downstairs and enter the meeting hall. I go up to the large chair that belongs to my father at the end of the meeting table and stand behind it. I watch as everyone files into the room either taking seats or standing at the side of the room. Everyone can come, but only those in favor with my father have a seat. Father as usual is the last to enter the room.
“Welcome everyone,” he announces as he takes his seat.
The whole room starts to applaud.
“In this meeting we are going to go over some development on our neighboring island of Obses. I have just gotten word that the island has been taken over by King Aadi until they pay their dept. They have a deadline of two weeks, and if they don’t pay it he will wipe the village out,” my father announces. “Any questions?” he asks the room.
“What about Bryn?” I can’t stop myself from asking.
My father stood up and turned toward me. I had known when I said it I was making a mistake. I’m supposed to stay quiet during the meetings. “I will worry about that,” he growls. “Meetings over,” he turned toward the rest of the room and said before walking out toward the dining

I lost my appetite anyway. I immediately changed into a shirt and some pants. I let down my braid so that it no longer circled my head. I go over to my window pull back the curtains and step onto the window seal. I slowly start to work my way down the side of the house. As soon as I feel my feet hit the ground I start to run as fast as I can manage to the stables.
This isn’t the first time I’ve done something like this which explains why the stable hand is never surprised when I show up asking for a horse. This is what I do when I need to clear my head I ride. I never go farther than the river before I have to turn back though. If I stay out any longer someone will notice i’m missing. That's my plan right now to go to the river to wash my face. When I finally get my horse I immediately jump on and leave.
I am completely taken by surprise when I arrive at the river. When I approach I hear two familiar voices. I get off the horse and look around the brush to the bank of the river. The two people are my father and his friend Alexander talking. It seems my father canceled his

The sound of footsteps going down the creaky wooden staircase echoed through the strangely silent house of the Tristessens. Between the walls, pestilence and death hung in the air like a thick smog, choking everyone inside. The only disturbance to the stagnant, silent atmosphere was the occasional cough rattling through the lungs of the man, Galen, who seemed much older than he was, and his children moving about the house to care for him. “Jackson, could you please get me the water? Bring it up here--quickly” Jillian called to her brother in a voice barely louder than a whisper.…

May 26, a day with regular African heat but extreme humidity, 10 year old Kwadwo (Kingsley) on the last walk home from school, struggles to get all the sweat out of his drenched T-shirt as he twists and twists numerous times until his palms are red. Agya, Kwadwo’s grandad is on the porch smirking, as he knows exactly what just happened. This “walk of shame” if you may has been made too many times. Kwadwo just walked approximately five miles in ninety degree heat all because his stomach being upset about not getting fried yams with pepper, shito (spicy black pepper sauce) and fried fish would bother him more than his feet being sore after the walk. Agya begins to speak but stops to clear his throat and as Kwadwo nervously reaches for the words “I didn’t do it,” Agya with pure joy in the tone of a show hosts announcing the winner, “YOU’RE GOING TO AMERICA.”…

His breathing was short and fast and the way his eyes bulged out of his skull was reminiscent to the time my father accidentally hit a deer, but I quickly put that thought out of my head. It was different, anyway. The deer knew its fate, but this rabbit still had some fight left in him. I knew what I had to do.…

I’ve realized in my lifetime that saddling a horse that you are going to ride is not as natural of an act to other people as it is to me. Since the moment I had both the strength and height to lift my own tiny saddle up to the back of my animal, I was saddling by myself. These days in the time that I set aside to ride, I don’t even think about the act of saddling, I could almost finish the act blindfolded. In my realization that not all people know how to saddle a horse and if they have an idea it may not be the proper way, I decided to share my knowledge in this area with others.…

The silence at the dinner table was unusually loud except for the slow munching of food that filled the air. Even the buzz of the crickets outside in the cold evening grass resounded through the dining room. The dinner table was made of a cow’s skin tightened on the sides of a wooden frame with four legs and the chairs were made of the countryside reeds that grew along the great Kwileto River. No one was talking to anyone and everyone concentrated on his or her plate of the evening meal. Sselebwa, Obina’s father was sitting at his usual spot enjoying its pleasantries from what seemed to be a long day of victory.…
