The Trelleborg fortress was also surrounded by a moat that was filled by a nearby river. These types of fortresses were almost impenetrable by other Viking clans because the walls were over twenty feet high and were covered with earth, so that they couldn’t be burnt down. Inside of each fortress, there were roads connecting all of the entrances and they met at the center. They also had longhouses inside of them, so that they could house the Viking soldiers. The Viking longhouse was the most efficient type of shelter for the amount of resources needed to build one. A longhouse was a building that would usually hold twenty to fifty Vikings. They were big enough to have multiple fires inside and had benches going down the whole length of each side for beds. In most of the bigger longhouses, they built another set of benches above the lower ones so that the sleeping space was doubled. If you were a Viking, it was required of you to have a weapon on you at all times. Most Vikings used an axe because they could also use it for gathering wood. If you were a wealthy Viking you could afford a sword or a bow. When raiding season came, it was a totally different game. All of the Vikings would load up their gear and set sail to go raid. The Vikings mostly raided churches and monasteries because they were filled with sliver and gold and weren’t guarded. This meant that they could get lots of loot without having to risk being captured by the English soldiers. A Vikings’ favorite loot wasn’t gold. It was actually silver, because it was a sign of wealth and it was used for many religious purposes. Over all, the Vikings were just as complex as any other country in Europe.
