Vignette The full time tenured competitive service employee has received yet another performance rating of "successful". For the past several years, she has strived for an above average rating of either "outstanding" or "excellence". Her performance reviews are extremely bland and offer no suggestions as to why the ratings are at best, "mediocre". She has participated in conferences, on and off-site job training sessions, and seminars, but nothing helps to promote or grow in her current career. She has applied for other positions outside of her current organization, however, her efforts have proven fruitless. The vignette must 1) serve a purpose relative to the research problem, 2) offer substantive explorative context, and 3) introduce an alternative form of representing data. Reflection, as a component of action research, teaches the idea of learning as a part of growth. To this, the vignette was used in order to provide a less personal and threatening way to tell a story about learning and professional development opportunities within the Department. The consistency of results based on different data collection methods adds credibility and “elucidates complementary aspects of the same phenomenon” (Crabtree, 2006, para 5). Third, the multiple analysts triangulation approach utilizes “two or more persons independently to analyze the same qualitative data and compare their findings” (Patton, 2015, p. 665).
