Some of the skills they require include punctuality, organization, self-motivation, self-discipline to mention just a few. It is the role of the teachers, in collaboration with the parents, to ensure that this essential skills are handed over to the students.
Within the school environment these skills are instilled into students through rules, policies and guidelines. However, these policies and guidelines do not auger well with the students and/or part of the teaching fraternity most of the times. The ‘no late

He gives each class a different assignment each with a different deadline. He expects to mark and hand the papers back to the students within two weeks. At the end of two weeks, the students hand in their assignments and the teacher then proceeds to mark them but when he is almost through marking the papers, five students come in assignments in hand and since he did not issue any late work policy he has no option but to accept them. This particular teacher is now faced with the challenge of identifying which class this students belong to, the assignment type and many other issues. At the end of the day the teacher would be highly …show more content…
Gillespie’s office’ website, a possible resolution to this problem would be to try and involve the students in setting up deadlines for submitting works. He further proposes providing two dates, a due date, which enabled him to be able to monitor his student’s academic capability and time management skills by providing them with ‘missing homework sheets’. The deadline date was the absolute last date beyond which assignments cannot receive credit. This approach, he argues, has been effective so far since the students are able to take responsibility for their own actions (Mr.Gillespie 's office)
We can therefore conclude that the ‘no late work accepted’ policy can be a tool to integrate responsibility and accountability to students. If it is implemented and used appropriately by both parties, then it can go a long way to making the academic life of both the students and their teachers not only enjoyable but also easy to

This is because they get a new teacher about every week or so which means different style lesson plans, discipline and etc. which can really confuse the students and do more damage than good for them. Also, during Kozol’s interview with a student named Mireya he heard many stories about how teachers have neglected disciplinary action. According to Mireya a student called her ghetto and several other things and the teacher did nothing about it.…

In Amy Widner’s essay, The Pursuit of Just Getting By, a college student expresses her dismay in the attitude her generation holds towards school work ethic. Widner insistently explains that the sardonic outlook that students have on doing homework and class assignments reflects negatively on her peers and primarily on the workforce they will be apart of in the future. Her essay insists that students take their work seriously in order to secure a good job and reputation, delivering a well explained list of reasons to do so; such as the fact that students are paying to attend class and it “increase[s]... chances of excelling in the job market.” Although her stances on the subject are well executed and backed by a large amount of evidence, Widner’s…

In the essay “The Dog Ate My Disk, an Other Tales of Woe” Professor Carolyn Foster Segal explains that even after lengthy syllabus warnings and a humorous cartoon of a cat explaining to its teacher that a dog ate its homework, students still came up with multiple excuses for being tardy, absent or turning in assigned work late. She categorized the excuses into these five categories, the family, the best friend, the evils in dorm life, the evils in technology, and the totally bizarre. For family, Segal points out that “The death of the grandfather/grandmother is, of course, the grandmother of all excuses” (565). Students will use that excuse all the time because the teacher will probably show pity for them in their sorrow. Demonstrating…

When I first started university, I had to go to an advising session; while, I do not remember what it was about, The one thing that managed to grab my attention was when the advisor said “I can spot a freshman a mile away” when someone asked her how, she replied” just search for people who look lost and confused”. It struck a chord deep within me because I was really lost and confused, not only that but also anxious, friendless, and afraid of all the responsibilities and of the possibility of failing. While my family assured me that these obstacles are the key element in becoming more responsible, and overcoming them will allow me to discover my strengths and weaknesses. I, on the other hand, felt like these obstacles were not character builders, but more like energy and time consumers that affected the academic performances and health of both my peers’ and myself. I strongly believe that fixing these problems should be one of the university’s priorities.…

The first days of school are the most crucial in implementing procedures and routines. For example, when a visitor walks into my room the students know to show “peace and quiet”. Also, to get my student’s attention I say, “Show Me Hands and Eyes” and they follow by repeating “Hands and Eyes”. This is a great way to get them focused quickly during instruction. Every child in my classroom has a job.…

While at some colleges there are some professors that do not accept late work, in this class the instructor was very understanding and allowed submission of late work for reduced credit. As stated in the syllabus for this class, “Final drafts of Major Assignments may be submitted late for reduced credit. Your grade will drop a letter grade for every 24 hour period the assignment is late. Short assignments may be made up for half credit only” (Kouider, 2014). Although students should submit work on time to be academically successful in this course the instructor is still willing to be understanding to the issues a student may face.…

The NAEYC standards are met by establishing early childhood programs whereby the educators are highly trained to enable them to detect any sign that may affect a child’s development. The programs help in learning and future developments of children. Also by evaluating early development and the health of the children it allows for early intervention and an opportunity for early diagnosis of specific children problems. This can be established right from pregnancy so as to know the history of a child’s health. Also by focusing on the family health and wellness, immunization status as well as nutritional health history.…

One of the areas that I am having difficulties handling in the classroom is determining when I should be flexible and when I should stand my ground. I have discovered that if I allow students to turn assignments in late, they tend to take advantage of my kindness. Additionally, I have found myself returning incomplete work to students and requesting them to complete it before submitting it back to me. I have not deducted points for their late or incomplete work, which has created an unfair atmosphere for the students that do submit their work on time and in a thorough manner. I have become frustrated with the students who expect to resubmit their subpar work for a better grade.…
