Views on the No late work accepted policy
Introduction
Parents send their children to school to not only become excellent academicians but also to gain useful life skills that will benefit in their future lives. Some of the skills they require include punctuality, organization, self-motivation, self-discipline to mention just a few. It is the role of the teachers, in collaboration with the parents, to ensure that this essential skills are handed over to the students.
Within the school environment these skills are instilled into students through rules, policies and guidelines. However, these policies and guidelines do not auger well with the students and/or part of the teaching fraternity most of the times. The ‘no late …show more content…
He gives each class a different assignment each with a different deadline. He expects to mark and hand the papers back to the students within two weeks. At the end of two weeks, the students hand in their assignments and the teacher then proceeds to mark them but when he is almost through marking the papers, five students come in assignments in hand and since he did not issue any late work policy he has no option but to accept them. This particular teacher is now faced with the challenge of identifying which class this students belong to, the assignment type and many other issues. Gillespie’s office’ website, a possible resolution to this problem would be to try and involve the students in setting up deadlines for submitting works. He further proposes providing two dates, a due date, which enabled him to be able to monitor his student’s academic capability and time management skills by providing them with ‘missing homework sheets’. The deadline date was the absolute last date beyond which assignments cannot receive credit. This approach, he argues, has been effective so far since the students are able to take responsibility for their own actions (Mr.Gillespie 's office)
We can therefore conclude that the ‘no late work accepted’ policy can be a tool to integrate responsibility and accountability to students. If it is implemented and used appropriately by both parties, then it can go a long way to making the academic life of both the students and their teachers not only enjoyable but also easy to
