He led by example. In the movie 1492, as the men are building the church, Columbus sets an example by trying to hoist the church bell up. He drops the rope then everyone else joins in and brings it to the top. Another way Columbus led by example was that he would treat the natives equal to everyone else. Columbus was a generous and trusted man based on his actions and the outcome of his first voyage.
On Columbus' second voyage he brought 20 ships and approximately 1500 men, with intent on conquering natives and placing colonies. He came back to the island and found everyone from Fort Navidad dead as the natives killed the men. The natives lied about this to them. His first two colonies were quickly destroyed, leading him to be forced back to Spain in chains in order to be tried for lying to his crew. His final two trips across the Atlantic were even less successful, as his brutal treatment of the native populations led them to stop trading with him. When most people think of Columbus’s arrival to the New World they only wish to see the immediate benefits that came out of the expedition, such as the discovery of new land, ecosystems, and crops.
