According to the 2010 Census, the Asian population grew faster than any other race group in the United States (US) between 2000 and 2010, with the largest proportion in the West (9). Among the different Asian groups with a population of 1 million or more, Japanese accounted for 71 percent and Filipinos accounted for 66 percent. Both had the largest proportions living in the West. Large proportions of Chinese (49 percent), Vietnamese (49 percent), and Koreans (44 percent) lived in the West as well (9). The majority of immigrants from Vietnam reside in 6 states: California has the vast majority of immigrants, followed by Texas, Washington, Virginia, Florida and Massachusetts (Terrazas, 2008)(9). The metropolitan areas of Los Angeles and San Jose in California are home to the largest number of Vietnamese immigrants.
Because the Asian population is a growing culture within the United States, with the highest proportion being in the West, chances are high that while practicing as a registered nurse (R.N.) there will be an increase in providing culturally competent nursing care to this population.
