My mother and I have lived in Vietnam for nearly 10 years until The Spouse Legal Permanent Resident Act (F2A) accepts us. The first place I set foot on American soil in 2008 was Mississippi. The early days living in a foreign land were a very difficult period. Homesick was like having a rheumatic disorder, sometimes it's a sharp pain, sometimes it heals... but it persists interminable . While living in America, I realized the culture of two countries are really different in personal freedom and independence. Since coming here, my parents have encouraged me to make my own personal opinions and have to do everything myself. As of now, I can see clearly independent character in my studies as well as in my daily life that got influent by the US culture. Difficult to learn English is unavoidable for anyone who just moved to America, I was no exception. The first day of school, I was like a kid who got lost in a crowded place because I cannot communicate with people in English. At that time, I really wanted to cry and return to Vietnam, but because my family really hopes I will be successful in the studies and in my major in the future, I have made every effort to be able to acquire English as quickly as possible so that I could achieve good grades in school. Time passed, I gradually found myself with a lot of changes in thinking, I was self exhort myself to try to do well in order to be able to pay

After reading the first four sections of “The Vietnam wars, I think that the Vietnamese people have a very proud culture. One example of this is in section one when China called them “the pacified south’ and they got offended. They got offended because they were a fierce and proud culture, so if you called them gentled and submissive they would retaliate. Another Example of why they are proud is in section two when the French invaded Vietnam and attempted to turn the natives to their culture and ideals, yet the people still clung to their traditions. This shows that they are proud because even when facing invasion, they clung proudly to their own culture.…

Happiness, expressed in an everyday sense, is a mental or a psychological state of being sound and well defined by positive energy or joy. One may feel happy in a different manner, and due to a different reason than another. For example, one may be happy to win a million dollar lottery, whereas another may be happy to just to be alive. It is subjective when it comes to interpreting happiness as it differs with every individual. Happiness is a word that is seen in a multitude of different ways by a multitude of different people. Everyone has their own idea of what happiness means to them, but it is a word that has no set definition. The author of “Happiness and Its Discontents”, Daniel Haybron views happiness as an entire emotional spectrum that is affected by several factors such as life satisfaction and being exposed to both pain and pleasure. Whereas Ed Diener and Robert Biswas-Diener the authors of “Can Money Buy Happiness”, describe happiness as the emotion someone feels when they obtain an object they believe will improve their life and can be acquired within their means. An example of this would be the joy someone might feel when they are able to buy a car…

It is impossible to lead a fulfilling life in a society with constant threats of attacks. Similarly, people who are sick in hospitals do not enjoy their lives irrespective of the amount of money that they have. To them, recovering from the sickness is what will enable them to achieve happiness. However, the poor are also not happy in life despite the fact that they are in good health or have close friends. Thus, I believe happiness encompasses a wide range of factors that make life…

My happiness comes from sitting around a camp fire with my grandparents as they tell me about the day that they met, 51 years ago, and my grandfather recalling what his first words to her were; it comes from sitting on the dock with my dog while loons sing and the warm colors of the sky bleed into the water; it comes from cutting the hair of an older gentleman at the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen so he can go to a job interview later in the day. Devoting my life to companionship and generosity in order to make the world a brighter place for all offers the happiness I require. I don’t believe a lonely life in the Alaskan forest, hiding away from the negative qualities of society, could ever inspire such pure…

The younger generations growing up in America are not as inclined to learn about the old customs (The Split Horn, 2001). Everyone has their own individual definition of happiness. Richard Taylor describes happiness as “a state of being, not a mere feeling” (Taylor, 116), but how may one come to this total state of fulfillment? Vivien Sung who wrote Five-Fold Happiness and Richard Taylor who wrote a chapter on happiness in his book An Introduction to Virtue Ethics both agree that happiness is made up of many different parts. Because happiness is made up of different components, achieving prosperity, longevity, and wealth are three elements that can lead to being fully…

My take on happiness deals more with perspective and the basic goods. Meaning, we live in a world where approximately 3.1 million children die from hunger each year (worldhunger.org). The simple fact that my myself and family do not have to worry about where our next meal is coming from is a blessing which keeps me happy. Therefore, knowing that I’m in a good place in the world and knowing that I have the basic things to survive like food, water, and shelter, keep me happy. One could say that I was lucky to have been born in a country that offers so much.…

Also, it is misleading to mix between happiness as a wonderful feeling and the causes of happiness. For example, when I was in my senior year of high school, I applied to a scholarship to study in the US, but the acceptance rate was very low for international students. In fact, it was that station of my life, where I exerted all my mental and physical effort in order to gain this golden opportunity to study what I love. Despite the fact that it was truly hard to get this scholarship, I was one of those five students who got the scholarship. I was in my room in my high school dorm when I received the scholarship acceptance notification.…
