Our world is a melting pot filled with a variety of cultures and ethnicities. People who grew up with a different cultural background sometimes forget their roots as they get older. I even forget my roots sometimes because, despite the fact that I grew up with a Vietnamese background, I have become so used to America and how they do things differently compared to Vietnam or Vietnamese people, that I simply forget about my culture and traditions. Another thing that I also overlook is the community that surrounds me every day. When I’m so caught up with my life and my extracurricular activities, I sometimes forget to take time to think about my community, how to give back, or how to make it better. I have progressively gotten better at reminding myself who I am by participating in cultural activities that my Vietnamese church offers. Every year we host an annual Vietnamese New Year festival at a local Youth Activity Center called Students Off the Street (S.O.S.). Vietnamese New Year is called Tết in Vietnamese and falls on the same day as Chinese New …show more content…
The first time I participated in a community service activity was Snack Pak 4 Kids. Snack Pak 4 Kids is a non-profit organization that helps provide food to students over the weekend so that they are well fed and ready to learn in school, because who can learn on an empty stomach? As I helped put food into each bag, it made me realize how big of a difference I was making in the community by simply putting a granola bar, orange juice, beef jerky, and other nutritious food in a bag. When we ran out of food to put in the bags, the people that ran the organization announced that we had enough bags worth of food to feed about 7,000 children and that astonished me. As I went home I felt really satisfied about giving back to my community for the first time and since then I’ve been participating more in community service

I have donated time in my city, state, country and internationally. Through the many opportunities that I have had for community service, I have been able to broaden my views, and look outside my community at how others experience our world. I have visited very diverse communities ranging from the inner city of Detroit, MI to a small, economically depressed village in Honduras, to the mountains of Pennsylvania and inside homes very different from mine in my own…

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

Before attending high school, my elementary school teachers would talk about civic engagement, and their descriptions lead me to believe that participating in community service would be boring and burdensome. I remember my teachers saying things like,” In high school you’re going to have to do community service in order to graduate. Such as volunteer at an elderly home, or an animal shelter.” Prior to actually completing a service project, I only had an unappealing image of community service in mind. However, once I got to high school, I grew to love community service as well as learn the importance of…

I was able to volunteer at a local bank that was sponsoring the Lake Park Elementary School for the holiday season. The school has over 300 underprivileged students between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade. Most of the students at that school only have one meal per day. Along with other volunteers, I packaged bags that contained candy, toys, toiletries, a blanket, and a pair of athletic shoes. The bags were able to provide the children with goods that we often take for granted.…

I devoted myself to being a key part of the interact club. I participated in events such as volunteering in local soup kitchens, Spicket River cleanup, earth day and helping to pick up trash around the city of Lawrence. After I saw what a difference I could make by just simply helping my community through the school, I decided to do some community service on my own. Following my trade area I went on to volunteer at Lawrence General Hospital. Throughout my time there, my eyes were opened even more as to what a change one can simply make by dedicating one's time to others.…

I started building my foundation for community service back in fifth grade with Girl Scouts. My troop volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House, read to kindergartners, and organized food at the food pantry. I continued these acts all the way up through eighth grade. In high school, I joined Key Club, where I sold flowers for powder puff, volunteered at my elementary school’s Trunk or Treat, and helped with the book and coat drive. Outside of school, I continued serving in my church through events like VBS.…

Your comment makes me think how people are thinking about immigrants. They are either hard-working people that do their best to be part of the new nation, or they are lazy criminals who do not help with economic and welfare or the country and just profiting from the sources that are offered to them. Two totally opposite perception and nothing between. The same idea I felt from the article about Vietnamese immigrants. On one side the perception of Vietnamese immigrants is "as a model minority" that is hard-working, intelligent and polite and on the other side, they are poor unemployed criminals.…

We spent a whole day at my school doing simple tasks such as garden cleaning, moving old furniture, covering graffiti, repainting old walls and stairwells. In the end, volunteering had a huge impact not only on me but also the community around me. It enabled me to connect with my community and make my school a better place. I realized that helping out with the simplest and smallest tasks can make a drastic difference in society. If we were to lose physical space, people would surrender their desire to obtain public good.…

For my in school Community Service hours I continued more of the Mustang events. The events that I used for my Community Service hours were the Homecoming Football Game, the Breast Cancer Walk, and Trunk or Treat. The Homecoming Game was the first football game I’ve been too since I was in high school, which in my opinion is quite sad. I was able to show my school spirit at an event I’ve never been to before, and the football team surprisingly won. Two things that I learned from this game were that, I do not understand football as much as I thought I did and that football games can actually be enjoyable.…
